Hay prices

Speaking of hay Haymaker --you guys making enough hay down there this year to let the NM prices settle back to something less than GOLD prices --
Someone told me a week ago they were shipping regular sized (65lb) bales of alfalfa to Houston and getting OVER $20 a BALE!!!! for it! (and I think that was FIRST cutting!)

Is that possible?
 
Depending ont he quaklity of hay it might get a bit spendy this fall. We lost a lot of Alfalfa acres this year to folks planting corn just in this county and from what I ahve been told that is being repeated all over the place.. Not so good hay, be it from waterways or whatever is probably going to be cheap enough if we get thew ater but there is generlaly not a lot of that.. Haven't looked a t a drought map for a while but sounds like the SOuth east could really use a lot of moisture so you might see hay being shipped in that direction instead of Texas this year.
 
I don't know what alfalfa bales bring down here. Not many folks use it. A few horse people will. But most prefer a good coastal hay for their horses. I do know that the feed stores are still chargin $8 and $9 for a bale of coastal and limiting folks to 2 or 3 bales at a time. So....I can see a bale of alfalfa bringin $20...but you won't see me payin that for it.

Presently we are paying $5 a bale for coastal for two barrel horses. Soon to be $3.50 when the fella gets it cut and baled. (We WILL stock up then)
 
A neighbor who is dealing with a guy from Florida was asked when he would get his hay up. the guy said said that seeing as how he was bringing a truck clear up here, he wanrted to haul little squares back as they were bringing $23 a bale in Florida.

And here I thought $3.25 a bale was plenty last fall. :wink:
 
a guy we broker with was flooded out, and has asked to load 4 trucks on Monday...so we went out last night and made sure we could fill the order. no test, no demands on weed free, just load the hay! $135 a ton. take that corn and ethanol and shove it! hay is the way!
 
Turned down $50 per roll (60" X 66" - 990 lb.) for some dried up ryegrass/fescue mixed hay last week. It was hard to do.

The drought here is making hay scarce and the "Hay Thieves" have started to work.

Will you take 55 a roll?
 
1st cutting alfalfa here with no rain is going for $140 to $160 a ton for 3 tie small bales, roughly 100 pounds each. Corn is definitely pushing the price of hay up as there seem to be a few less acres available.
 
All right you guys quite your whining! Hay here is $15.00 per bale, that is 88 pound Alf. Comes in from Washington. Can't wait for the local alfalfa crop to come in! Local is between $7-10 per 40 pound at the moment, typically a fescue mix.
 
You can get the wrapped dairy rounds here for about $85.00 but you cant feed them to the ponies.
