Heifer and Bull Calves

Last year my first 10 calves where all bull calves and no heifers which all came with in 2 days. Now this year in the same time frame I have had 8 heifer calves and no bull calves.

Now I had said earlier that I should save my heifers this year which I have not done the last two years maybe this is a sign that I need to save them this year.

Has anyone heard of any old wise tales about this happing? Hopefully it means we will have a wet summer. Hopefully its not a sign of a dry summer.

Just a thought or my ramblings for this lazy sunday afternoon

Thats what they did last year to. The other thing to is my dad runs some of his cattle with me and his first 10 calves where all bulls calves. Just thought it was interesting the diffrence from his to mine.

My vet says that when a cow first comes into heat the PH balance she has is conducive to bull calves and as she is going out of heat you will get more hiefers.

So if you follow his way of thought the more vigorus bulls that keep looking for a chance to mate will produce more bulls and a bull that is lazy ( might be very hot and laying in the shade) will produce more hiefers and a longer caving time as they are to lazy to keep on top of the girls.

I'm not sure if this is factual but I have teased one of my friends as he is on his third daughter and no sons.

Two years ago we had waaay more hiefers than steers and it was the wettest year on record! I first heard that theory on here.

Last year we had a pretty wet summer and not alot of heat. When I turned my bulls out I might have been on the tail end of their heat cycle. That theory makes since I just never heard of that before. Went out tonight to do my checks and I had 5 more to day that where all heifers calves. This year when I sold them my heifers brought just as much as my steers did hopfully that stays the same for next year.
