Would someone be so kind as to direct me to the thread where Soapweed posted the picture of his 'gizmo'....not the gizmo that Peach Blossom uses on the 4 wheeler, the other 'gizmo' that he uses durin brandin. I did a search and the 4wheeler cage is the only thing that comes up. I'm almost certain he refered to it as a 'gizmo' also LOL
I wanna try to get Mr Lilly to get one built before we work calves in a few weeks. And I'd rather have a picture to show him, than to try to explain how it was made (my memory might not hold up to all the details LOL) I can picture it in my head....but gettin what's in my head...to come outta my mouth and make any sense at all is 2 different stories.
Please help!!! :D

Calf trap in action

Here is a pretty good close-up picture of the deal.

The wheel is a garden variety wheel, which are usually sold with a tire and tube attached, available at your local farm and ranch supply store. After taking off the tire, it makes a nice V-shaped pulley. The vice-grips are the "C-clamp" welding type. The "brake" holding the rope is made from two pieces of steel, 4" x 5". The pads are made from baler belting. Hope this helps. Good luck.

As soon as the weather warms a bit, we will be trying ours out again. The calves are starting to get pretty big and stout, so we are welcoming a bit of "mechanical advantage" in holding them still for processing.

Thank you for postin the close up picture soapweed....I was explaining to him today what I could remember of it. (how it was made) I knew it had somethin that grabbed onto the rope, but didnt know what. This helps me a lot. Now I can just show him pictures :D And of course, when we get one made and use it...I'll be sure to post pictures of it.

With all due respect Lilly, I would not try building one. Soapy experimented and modified his a number of times before settling on the design you see pictured here. Save yourself a lot of trouble by just buying the original from Soapweed. He can have one sent to you before you can even get the necessary materials. You won't be sorry.

I tried to copy Soapweeds gizzmo. We had trouble because I didn't do the vice grip right and we ruined several ropes. We also had trouble setting it up so we could line up our ropes on the pully. I guess our horses aren't as good as soapweed's. I decided the Nordfork worked better for us. I would also recommend buying one from him

Most likely, there's all the parts needed to build one down at the shop already. Mr Lilly and his dad don't get rid of very much, ya know....they might need "that" someday. LOL
Ours will hafta be a lil different set up since we don't have a Hydra bed. From the up close picture it don't look like it would be too hard to measure and get real close on the angles of how it's put together.

We don't normally drive a pickup into our workin pens. I was wonderin how it'd work if it was mounted permanantly onto the top of a gatepost. we also talked about makin it where it would mount in a receiver hitch. That'll be the main drawback on buildin one, findin a good place to mount it.

hire the rig, pickup, and Soapweed to just do it all! only problem is he will be so busy, we won't get the pleasure of his photography! and I mean that sincerely Soap, I eagerly await your pictures.

Our main computer crashed, so until we get it back from the body shop, the pictures will have to wait. Once in a while I can borrow the Kosmo Kid's outfit to still get on Rancher.Net to see what is going on, but I can't do the picture thing.

There are no copyrights on our "calf trap" deal. I really am not trying too hard to sell them, because the cattle keep us busy enough.

Lilly, a fence post works pretty well to mount them on. That is all we used the first year. We like the Hydra-Bed mount, because it saves digging a couple post holes when we brand. Let us know how it works out.........on second thought, you don't have to. I might not want to know. :-)

Oh no...no Soapweed pictures???? What'll we do???

LOL I'll let you know how it works....whether ya wanna know or not....the good, the bad, and the ugly....

I'm sure it'll take a few times to figure out how best to go about usin it.....but you will get a full report LOL
