Helper dog. What kind?

Hi all,
I have been interested for some time in getting a little puppy dog. (What kid in his first few years hasn't???) Now that I have a part time job, I have enough money to be able to keep one. I really want a Collie dog, but don't know about the training part. I know some say that a Collie has to have a job to do, and I guarantee that it wouldn't run out of jobs and games out here. However, can someone else train her? If they do, will she still bond and be responsive to me? Any suggestions on age, training, and sex would be helpful.

See if you can get some training for yourself. Try a clinic or someone that uses dog alot and would be willing to show you the ropes. There are some good books and tapes that are real informative. No sense sending your dog for training then it would know more then you. :-) Learn together and you will have a partner. :cowboy:

I always get a male dog. Even tho I am over 50 now my mother still lives in the same yard and she is a DOG LOVER. She says "your not having pups and me get attached to them then they have to be sold." :?

I don't think it matters as I have seen both gender work well. You can also get either sex neutered and they would work fine.

I do like the border collie but I also keep them kenneled when not with them working or playing as the are busy dogs.
Have you thought about checking out your local animal shelter. You might just find a pretty good friend. :-)
 
Can't beat a spayed female. :D They work as well as a male, if not better, and a bonus is there's none of that constant leg lifting. :wink: :wink:

I second that about getting some training. I take my dogs to basic obedience classes no matter what. It helps them socialize, bond with you, and in general makes for a better adjusted dog. Border collies are high drive dogs though, and can get into a lot of mischief if they are bored, so if you're going to get one, be prepared to keep it busy and give it a job. You'll have a much happier dog. :D

And remember to post pictures if you get a puppy!!!! :lol:
 
We'll do! I think that was a no-brainer. :wink: :lol: Actually, my main roadblock is Dad. But I guess I'll just have to put forward my MOST convincing speech. LOL!

Just remember it's easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.

I have a female Border Collie she's not spayed but has never been in heat that I have seen she's about 6 now and is a Top Hand.She's never been on a chain or in a kennal her whole life.She has been locked in a stock trailer a few times though.
 
Shewy! Had one heck of a time trying to see it. I guess I'll take BMR's word for it. I think that I have found the best breed, being an Australian Shepherd. What do you think? Any past experience with them? DO you know of any good places to get one? (Preferably within the state of Colorado.)

Rick is going to breed a good female(Magic) sometime this fall/winter. I have a full sister to her that is awesome-better than Rick's IMO :D Sire is going to be a dog from Texas Slash V lines. Should be some cattle workaholics.

Also the breeder of Ricks female(Magic) and my female also has a full sister(Ivy) she is going to breed this fall to a Slash V dog she has, he throws good pups-should also be good workers. I know she breeding another female also-I dont know how many reservations she has for pups but know she has some already.

You are right-Aussies is a good choice. There are good ones in all breeds but I prefer the Aussies. Just be sure you get one with working bloodlines from working parents no matter what breed you get.
 
Thanks! I'm just ten miles outside of Calhan. Good to know there is a breeder close by! I will certainly be in contact with them and try to find out what I can about availability of the pups.
