We have two older mares that came down with Pigeon fever. The first went through a series of antibiotics and then went off..She is feeling good although an abscess developed recently and is sraining fine..

The second mare has always been prone to foot abscesses....She went lame after the pigeon fever set in. The vet feared laminitis and did x-rays...The coffin bone is fine and he saw some dark spots confirming what the Farrier and I thought. Our Farrier is one that draws a lot of the PRCA Barrel Racers when they are in the NW and a lot of the Vets will consult with him when they aren't sure....

On this second mare, she had been on Bute for about 3 weeks and still stiff and sore. Antibiotics this long as well. Our thoughts are the long term antibiotic support has not let her body respond to the pigeon fever and also may be delayed the abscess....

The mare still hurts and my wife began looking for alternatives to bute....She comes accross this site and is very interested.

After she researched it, she was intersted and asked my opinion. Well, I asked what studies were done to show no long term effects. Her response is 'They say it is all natural ingredients"...I say Arsenic would be an all natural ingredient, but.....It does have long term negative effects....

Anyone used these products? The site has a lot of testemonials, but who knows how valid they are? I have used some products that work and others that show no difference in terms of foot care, ect.. in the past....

Thanks for any and all feedback,

PPRM, I am visiting a horse trainer friend in Aubrey, Texas right now.
I'll ask him if he knows anything about this; or about Pigeon Fever.
Daughter and sonin-law had it go through their horses the fall of '05. It is nasty, nasty stuff.

Where is that place located? I didn't register so I didn't find out.

I am not sure what you mean by where the place is located you did not regster. We never did,

Yes, it reminds me a lot of strangles. It is almost something you just need to let got through them and they develop their own resistance....

On the site, the herbal Bute is a name I am skeptical of. It is either bute or is not,

Apparently the guy that owns it is Don Silver and they are located i Tennessee....Here is the end of the testamonials page,

SUPER LOOPER MAGAZINE April 2004

EQUINE SCIENCE, located in Memphis, TN. has become quite a leader in the Herbal supplement business. The company started small a few years ago, but has grown to the point of offering more than twenty-five herbal based products for horses.

Before taking a new product to market, it is first formulated by research scientists and veterinarians. The product is then thoroughly tested for its effectiveness and reliability.

Several of their most popular products include CIPEX, a unique blend of natural herbs developed to combat degenerative joint disease, NAVICULAR and osteoarthritis. "Herbal treatments are not a quick fix." says Don Silver, manager of Equine Science. "They are", he continues, "a natural way of healing and keeping your horses healthy."

EXTRA CALM is a blend formulated to calm nervous, jittery performance horses.

For senior horses, and performance horses, they recommend SPECIAL JOINT BLEND. Aches and pains associated with stiffness and swelling will find relief in this unique herbal blend.

Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association WORLD CHAMPIONS Roy and Karen Duvall of Checotah, OK. heartily endorse these products.

EQUINE SCIENCE now has dealers nationwide, including Jeffers Equine and Chariton Vet Supply.

Most products will ship the same day as order. Created BY Horse People FOR Horse people, this company was formed to give the horseman a natural alternative for caring for and improving the health and performance of their horses.

My friend says he is familiar with some of the products. If the Herbal Bute is called Devil's Claw, he says it has some theraputic value but is not as effective as Bute. As far as he knows there is no long term side effects from it.

He says to contact Karen Noble at Stillwater, Ok as she does recommend using it in certain situations. She is a Equine Healer. She might be able to help you with your horse anyway. She is real effective. I've known her and her abilities for years. She has sure helped lots of horses...including some for him.

Hope this helps!

Thanks FH,

This old mare is feeling better today, but it is heart breaking to watch her hobble around. Keep in mind the hobbling is a combination of tenderness from the abscess and the muscle aches from the pigeon fever abscesses....If it was a chronic thing, I would do the right thing.

She was a great feedlot horse, arena horse and got to cattle quick when riding her outside....Then, a chid is around her and her whole body language would change and she'd lower her head to accept the child.....Always the boss mare as well....You can still see that pride and dignity in her eye.....

The Grey gelding, "Duece" is out of her....

I will give Karen Noble a call....I suspect our chiropractor may know her...She was a NFR Barrrel Racer and is into healing as well....
