Any Canucks watch Canada AM this morn? They are in Belfast Ireland. Theres a bunch of Canadians that have hockey going in Belfast, thier called the Belfast giants. Apparently the Irish are taking to this and all the tickets are selling out. Its the most spectated sport in N. Ireland because its a family game and doesn't divide catholics and protestants, the only game in Ireland that apparently doesn't.Theo Fluery goes over and plays there at times.

The guy I coach with played over there-he says it's a bit different but fun lol. Theo was supposed to play in Meadow Lake with the Horse Lake Thunder a few years ago. Theo's sure had some highs and lows in his life. Glad he got a chance to win the gold medal in Salt Lake.

Ireland is where Hurley originated not where hockey originated. Man your the Ken Linesman of hockey posters lol.

My bad. You are right. I see where hockey goes all the way back to 2000 B.C. in Egypt and Persia.

Who is Ken Linesman?

Origin

"Hockey is the oldest known ball and stick game. Records exist of it having been played in Persia in 2000 BC. The name hockey probably derives from the French hocquet, or shepherd's crook, and refers to the crooked stick which is used to hit a small ball. The game became more organized late in the 19th century and became an Olympic sport in 1908."

That is probably referencing field hocky which is probably what ice hockey was born from.. At least that is a hunch.. Not to much ice in ancient persia..

No doubt ice hockey sprung from field hockey. And I had no idea how popular field hockey was until I snooped around the net a little.

Finally figured out what those guys were playing out at the Air Force base! I have driven by there a thousand times and noticed them on the field with sticks but didn't pay much attention.

Like to go by and watch the Rugby though. Pretty tough game.

Man I feel sorry for you Mike,no hockey or field hockey in your life, how about shinny, ever heard of that?Take a year sabbatical to Canada...we'll introduce you to the finer things in life :P

Field Hockey is really limited in where it is played in the US. Our school had a girls team but most of Illinois doesn't. I believe that in New England it is played a lot more. I messed around with it for a while when I was in Junior high just for the fun of it as a girl I was "dating" at the time played.. It was fun, darn rough game too.... All I know is any game with a bunch of angry women running around with sticks is a sight to see, lol...

chuckle....our school has noon hour intermurals, mixed boys and girls, field hockey indoor and outdoor is played. My son used to come home and say...man I'm happy I don't have to play hockey against a bunch of girls...his legs would be black and blue.

Field hockey is the norm around here, everyone plays it in school.

No Hockey, (ice or field) no cricket, no lacrosse, rugby, soccer, etc.

Played football, baseball/softball, and basketball. That kept me busy all year.

Shinny? Is that like Tiddlee Winks?

Oh we have all those things too....guess we're more cultured

Shinny=road hockey

Whats tiddly winks....drunkin passes

Theo played junior in Swift Current for Graham James. 'Nuff said. Sheldon Kennedy came forward and sent that evil b$%#@rd to jail. Some of the other boys didn't.
He also had a meltdown playing for Belfast if I recall. Those demons are going to haunt him all his life. What a shame.

By road hockey do you mean on roller blades? We played a bit of that in college in Evanston but nothing serious, it was more just skating with a stic and passing the "puck"... We did floor hockey in gym as well.. That was a lot of fun, one of the favorite winter time/rainy day activities..

We always enjoyed playing random sports growing up so we actually did play Rugby a bunch of times (I am sure we were not following the rules   ) and even had some kids bring in cricket and lacross stuff to school. If nothing else it was always fun to try different sports than the usual and most of the times we did it we had to adapt the rules to fit how many folks we had there to play.

You play roadhockey on a road wearing skidoo boots or whatever lol. Watch 'Wayne's World'-CARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!! lol. In Canada you play hockey everywhere you can smack a puck or ball around with a stick. Floor Hockey against the teachers in Grade 12 got pretty intense-nothing liking laying a legit smack on authority.

Sure... Waynes World... From his basement in Aurora illinois None of movie filmed there as far as I can tell, Aurora was about 15-20 minutes from where I grew up).. Our high school sport against the teachers was basketball... And the darn teachers cheated like no get out but still would loose.

We did the car thing with stickball and stuff like that.. Even some football at friends who didn't have a big enough yard..

DAMN....I did not know that, missed that somehow,#$%@# thats pisses me off more then anything in the world, this happened to some close friends of ours, bad priest, they CANNOT get over it.

Oh, absolutely NR, there are lots of Canadians who have done well in movies and TV in the states... They just always introduced the skit on SNL as live From Wayne Campell's moms basement in Aurora Illinois... Wish there was a Stan Mikita's burger joint there... looked like a good time..
