Horned Hereford?

Just for the sake of curiosity from somebody who has Horned Herefords are there vast differences between them and Polled Herefords? I've always had Polled, but I've been sidelined from cattle raising for a few years and am now considering having a few cows again. I want to stick with a Hereford of some type since I know them and love their easy disposition ( I'm sick of trying to high jump gates from wild cows) and I know their other quirks. My Grandad had Horned Herefords (before my time) and he always swore to me that if you bred the horns off you bred the a** off too. Other than that....anybody with at least semi-brilliant insight on this?

Thanks!

IMO, there is a lot more variety of bloodlines with horned Herefords. Polled seedstock has a more limited total herd available to choose from.

I have used a polled Hereford bull from a local breeder on my heifers the last two years and have been well pleased. I recently bought a horned Hereford 2-yr old to replace him and hope he performs just as well.

Sorry, but my insight is not even semi-brilliant. You'll get some better answers.

We raise Horned Herefords and just knock the horns off.

We have a few head that also have some polled breeding in them and we are happy with them.
There does seem to be a bigger selection amoung the horned then the polled.

I think the horned line has a lot better growth, better bone structure, and just plain look better. but I am biased

not sure how far back you would have to look, but there is a thread on this very topic about a mile long........if you wanted to go look for it. :D

i know little to nothing about herefords , but i'd go with horned. but i can't remember why.

Thanks for the replies! A Black Hereford? Hmmm...think I'll go down in flames with the old school red variety.

Jigs, you have a right to be biased,I've seen pics of your cows, they'd do!

This has been discussed before many times. I recommend that you buy from someone who is absolutely commited to breeding the best Hereford cattle they can. Unless you have nostalga to one type or another, you will have the best luck doing business with the person who can objectively evaluate both types of cattle and choose the best year in and year out and not let their past biases and pejudices guide their breeding decisions as their prejudices only serve to hold back their breeding program.

Their are good cattle in both segments.
