Urgent action needed on horse slaughter bill markup

On April 19th the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee will be holding a markup of S. 311, The Horse Slaughter Prevention Act. This legislation is sponsored by Senator Mary Landrieu (D-LA) and would prohibit the processing of horses for human consumption.

In particular, this act would prohibit the "shipping, transporting, moving, delivering, receiving, processing, purchasing, selling or donation of any horse or other equine to be slaughtered for human consumption."

The loss of this management tool could result in horses being uncared for and/or dumped around the countryside.  Some of these animals are going to be treated cruelly and left to live in pain or even starved by people that cannot or will not care for them.

This legislation was introduced during the last Congress as H.R. 503, and with your help we were able to get an unfavorable vote in the House Ag Committee. While the bill still made it to the House floor and passed 263-146, your letters were a big help in opposing this legislation.

Your help is needed again.

Below is a list of all the Senate Committee Members and their addresses. Please inundate these offices with your letters.
