Horse's Back Trouble

Took our horse's in to get their feet trimmed and shoes on 1 horse.
The horse getting shoes was being a royal pain in the backside. Wouldn't stand still, pulling away from the shoer.
Just no idea of what was going on with him. He was really bad on his back feet.
Shoer suddenly stood up and started running his fingers down his back and the horse was arching away from his fingers and we found swelling where his back meets his hind quarters. Back looks out of line. His tail is not even lined up.

Now I have been given a couple of different suggestions. I'm just not too sure which one to follow.
One person said to take hot water and DMSO and apply that to his back. Another person told me to find a chiropractor for him.

Any thoughts on these suggestions?
 
Chiropractor. I would not put DMSO on a horses back.

How far are you from Helena? There is a great horse chiropractor there.
I'm trying to remember his name. He's a vet and his name is Sid...Sid...
got it!!! Sid Erickson. I highly recommend him.

Did you see this horse fall down and try and catch himself
or anything out of the usual?

We are quite a distance from Helena.
Got a tip on a couple up here. Going to call one tomorrow. The other one is hard to get a hold of.

FH I think that is the same guy my shoer said was great. I'm terrible with names. :oops:

I was hoping to ride that horse today, but not with his back like that.
 
Start calling chiropractors in town/s close to you , you will be amazed at how many have been helping horses. It is not that uncommon at all.

Good thing your farrier caught it while you were getting him shod it could have been worse had you tried to ride him again without knowing.

Yep Chiro. And just because things look out of line in his back, doesn't necessarily mean that's where it's at. They compensate for pain in wierd ways, just like we do when we hurt. Could be in his hips, shoulders, etc, and a good Chiro will be the one to help with that.

Don't expect one trip to do the trick. Sometimes it does, but sometimes more than one adjustment is needed. Little time off afterwards to so things that were sore have a chance to get unsore.
 
Called my chiro this morning, he doesn't do horses anymore. Drat.
Can't reach the other guy of course.
Going to ask my vet if he knows of anybody.
If I can't find anybody local, looks like we get to make a trip to Helena. :D
 
Faster Horses called Sid Erickson and left a message to see if I could meet him in Great Falls. My shoer said he is great too and he does travel up to Great Falls.
I hope to hear back from him.

There is a vet down in Helena that also does chiro work, but we need to get 10 horses together before she will come up.
