a good friend of my dad's just stopped in to ask if i could train a couple of horses for him, a three year old and a five year old. said he would give me a three year old quarter / arab filly in trade. not sure if it is a good idea or not. guess i will have to go and see what i have to deal with. and how if he just wants them started or what.

Just remember that old saying..." if it looks ( sounds) too good to be true....it usually is"

But then again, maybe not with this situation..........keep us posted

I wouldn't do it for a half arab.....lol. Charge him 500 a head a month or maybe barter for some hay or good saddle. The horse market is in the shitter for unbroke horses right now..... specially' grade or mutt horses. He couldn't sell that horse if he tried, hell, he might not even be able to give it away. The market really sucks right now. Just my 2 cents

You know the old saying "don't look a gift horse in the mouth...":???:

To heck with that! Look at the mouth, back, feet, and everything else that your going to get if you take on this job.

All the Best.

YG,
Just thoght i'd chime in on this deal.Sounds like it could be a good deal either way,if like Choclab suggested you can get money to start these horses do that,it's bussiness,so i suspect if a guy can't sell good bred quarter horses he might think twice about feeding a grade horse.Having said that, a good horse like Triangle said is valuable also.Mabye put some time on this horse and sell him as a good trail horse or put him on some cows for a few months and take him to a ranch horse sell.Quarter/arabs are good to cross in my opinion, lots of stamina, athletic, cowy, nice conformation. Not as nice as a full quarter, but nice just the same.

I wouldn't want a QH/Arab, but thats just been my experience.

The most fair way to figure out what is what is to give your time a value and give the QH/Arab a value. Then charge your dad for the difference...
that is if you want the QH/Arab. REMEMBER CASH IS KING.

Unbroke horses aren't worth squat. It is what a horse can do that gives him a value. Older and wiser is what people are looking for in horses, for the most part.

Gentle is a pretty color.

Good luck and let us know what you decide.

I still like the cross,my horse that i ride is QTR/ARAB and she's freakin' awesome.Yeah i have straight quarters to but i prefer her.A good horse is a good horse by any other name.I'd take it if i was closer.I like the mutts, given a chance they usaually rise to the occasion.Seen a lotta' well bred quarter horses that did'nt ever amount to much with all the fancy breeding they could put on them.Depends on who's training them i guess.

I have also seen some supposedly well bred horses that didn't amount to much between the ears and conformation areas. my first horse i trained for myself was a qh/morgan, best damn horse i ever owned his heart was so big he would do anything i asked of him. sure do miss having him around, kept him as a stud and until he had a few daughter running around. now my kids have a great great granddaughter from him definitly not purebred but still a great horse for the kids her mama was a little on the small side so when i ride her my 6'3" frame look like a bear climbing a sapling :D

I like the cross, you can't find a horse with more heart then an Arab. My mare is Arab -morgan cross.I love her. Greg also has a soft spot in his heart for Arabs.

Judge that horse as an individual.Every one is different. Not all Scotsmen are cheap, not all Italians are gangsters, and not all Arabs are airheads.

any horse you can't use, brood mare or under saddle,is an expensive lawn ornament.

I have to jump in here too...my favorite horse of all time was an arab/qh...he would and could do anything on the ranch...hubby even enjoyed riding him...I still have him, he's old and lame, but he'll die on the place...I do agree though, each horse is different and once the horse finds his right owner, they too are the best horse, no matter what the breed...give every horse a chance, despite the market, breed, and looks...course we have more geriatric horses here than we need...lol

It's always been interesting to me that some horses and some people can have a 'personality conflict'. We used to have a horse finding service where we put buyers and sellers together, or sold a horse for a third party. We generally knew the problem the horse had (sometimes it is more of a problem the people had) and told the interested buyer about it. (We also found out that what people DON'T LIKE, is the suprise of finding out--maybe the hard way--the problem with the horse.) If you tell them, right up front then they make the call on whether or not this problem would bother them. It is interesting what bothers some people that don't bother another one. Anyway, we found this a successful way to sell horses.

Back to the personality conflict...we have seen horses that weren't happy with one owner (and vice-versa) go on and make a great horse for another person.

Horses are ALWAYS interesting.
