Moved some cattle around on Friday evening and by 1 or so today they had discovered the joys of their new pasture.

Usually bone dry this time of year but not this year.. Even in the spring it is usally only 6-10 inches deep... Little deeper right now..

Another group of cows and bulls standing in a "puddle" which basically formed anywhere the cows formed up.. At least it was nice and sunny today, maybe we lost some of the water to evap and more soaking in..

At least the whole pasture wasn't wet...

Isn't nice to see all that green still? That ole bull in the puddle seems quite content. Everything looks pretty happy and fat...and that's a good thing! Thanks for the pictures.

Probably just because it was the first day in the pasture and they were about 1/2 mile away from any built up dung.. Yes, we have flies but they haven't been to god awful this year.. Nope, we do nothing for them. No IGR, no spray or pours.. Well, we pour the calves at first shots so that protects them for a wee bit but not for too long..

But we do have them.. Must have about 20 or 30 in my truck right now

`IL Rancher-

Just out of curiosity! Knowing the income losses that fly's create, along with the aggravation to man and beast - - why don't you have a fly control protocol?

DOC HARRIS

Generally speaking our fly control plan is to keep the cows moving doc.. We sell a bit of meat direct and people balk at IGR and it doesn't seem to work all that great for us with the amount of other people in the area, ie across the street, that don't use it and we happen to be downwind from them.. Fast rotation seems to keep the cows ahead of the flies for the most part, we very rarely reach threshold amounts that would call for treatment if we move the cattle fast and far enough.

What is your location from the flooding taking place in Illinois? My daughter lives in Arlington, indicates all roads surrounding the town are passable yet flooded. Near Triumph, where the farm/cattle are located, water is three wires high, livestock having to be moved to higher ground.

WE are in the same county as your daughter, just at the other end of it, right on the border with Henry county.. One of the big rains split right before it hit here and reform to the east of us and I bet that is why she is flooded out more than I am... A lot more flooding to the east and north of here, especially the rock river drainage.. Chicago area was hit hard too because it is all concrete and tehw ater and no where to go...

Sad part is that Southern Illinois is bone dry.
