TTB - 15 sets? Holy cow
Yes, and I might even be low...don't remember exactly what Lazy Ace said. And we have another...so 16 + sets. I don't know how many cows we've calved out, but I don't think more than 200...we're just starting. I always thought that some of our twinning was because we give PGF 2 alpha after watching cows for 5 days to somewhat synchronize for AI. But we have just as many twins in our commercial cows that are not AIed and in our registered cows that we turn out with the bull at the beginning of the season.
Makes me wonder if we are in "synch" with our grass in our grazing system, even though we calve starting in late March and in April, as we are obviously flushing a (probably) highly fertile set of cows.
While we pasture calve we try to be pretty diligent in watching the cows (for reasons like our cow with twins that had the tail coming first). I often wonder if folks have more twins than they know, but because of calving in large pastures (sections instead of quarters) I wonder if they miss them. I am in no way, shape or form trying to bash anyone, as this is the setting my Dad calves in. If a cow had twins, and left one, he'd likely not find it unless it showed up doggied at water or something.
Hope calving is going well for everyone still calving, and the calves are going quickly for those who are all calved out!
Cheers---
