We are having thunder sleet and and freezing rain today, and this is quite an experience. Nothing worse for getting around and on the cattle, but I will take it over 105* and brown pastures.

I hope all goes well for you down there! If you didn't have so many, they could all fit in your living room and watch movies with you like all mine are... :D

We have six heavy heifiers in the barn and a mom and baby, so all our movies are g rated and nothing to make those expecting to go into labor.. Ice Age is the first pix and then Father of the Bride after the little one is nestled into the straw and read a bedtime story.. :D Four inches and still falling off and on of snow.. :D

That sounds like a fine, appropriate plan for the situation!... :D Good Luck on the calving! I don't think I'll have any during this storm, but am going to check around the clock anyway....especially #3 and #6. I probably just have an inch or two at most right now.

Mine don't get the movie package but with only 18 they all came in and have stayed in so far ( 1" of frozen sleet over night ) - - - the entire south side is open so the low winter sun penetrates clear to the feeder on the north. I keep gates closed on the south so the manure will build up to about 12" of dry powdery bedding.

No wind, nice sunny dry soft bedding, less than 20 feet to feed and less than 200 yards to the pond ( I have not turned on the waterer this year as the pond has stayed open )

After the cold is gone I clean that out. My concrete is sloped 1" per foot to the south so if I leave the gates open they will walk the manure out and have bare concrete to lay on. I have people tell me having them lay on manure is bad but I feel the sun kills bacteria and with the slope taking the urine away it has worked well for me since I built the barn in 1973. In the summer I leave the gates open and the foot traffic will keep the manure down to about 2" and still dry - - - cattle rarely stay inside in the summer and the sun does not penetrate clear in so I don't like the build up then.

I cleaned all the outside concrete yesterday so they keep dry feet and they are running in a 16 acre lot as well with a pond and tree lot at the south end. I even have placed old concrete sidewalks in the shallow parts of the pond so that they have firm footing if the go in.

I think it I was a cow I would like it here!

We made it through and didn't lose power. Sure is slick on the county roads hard packed and glazed over. It's moisture but not the most desirable.

Glad you didn't lose power, 4Diamond!

I'm not going to mention names, but I wouldn't want to be a cow at a couple outifts in this thread.... :D :D :D

"You never know when
a movie and a few
sincere words can have
an impact on a cows life"

"Imagine every cow is
wearing a sign that says
'Make me feel important'"

the best motivator there
is. When cows feel good
about a ranch, they
produce better."

:D :D :D :D

Everyone should take pics of the snow! I just posted some. :D
