Glad you're done - - - if everything goes right I will start in about a week - - - We had weather good enough to calve earlier this year again( except for the odd storms that just last a day or so) and I'm thinking I will move them up a couple of weeks for next year.

Good for you girl! now instead of watchin a cows rearend, you can go danceing, hava a lil fun  ...............good luck

I do a really small operation which I gear mainly toward gentic improvement in the stock I sell, which are Reg. Black Angus. I try to keep around 20-25 momma cows which is enough for me on the acreage I have and with the ' plan' I follow. I sell all critters private treaty and it's worked out excellent for me. It takes a bit more time...but since I retired ( @ 39 yrs of age 6 yrs ago!!) I have the time, so it all works out!

I did have to put down the momma cow of the twins. to begin with she was older than dirt and septicemia had begun to set in her uterus after the delivery of the twins. She bled out horribly after having the twins, which were itty bitty themselves.

I spent about a total of 2 hrs shoulder deep in her and got the blood stopped but something else had gone askew. I thinking that uterine artery was leaking from a small tear. So I put her down, she'd earned her keep yrs go and I wasn't about to let her suffer any longer.

And HayMaker....Bingo Baby!!!! you called it right....party time now!!!!

Geeeee, Kolanuraven....since you now seem to have some extra time on your hands, you are MORE than welcome to head our way and give us a hand...or two!!

Congrats on the successfull calving season, I envy your promptness. My cows think they're done, only one calf in the last 2 days, and there's still 130 to go! :?
Anyone else having way more heifers than bulls, or is it just me? Maybe it's my mineral program. :D

I'm scheduled to be in Casper in July/Aug...so you'll be all done by then!

Afraid it's a wee still too cold in your world for these Southern bones!!! When we owned the ranch in NE ....I MADE SURE I was outta there by Labor Day as it always seemed to turn cold the next day!!!!

Good luck w/ your critters!

Silver out of my 20 calves...I've only got 5 bulls. I don't really like that as my bulls get picked out by their new owners before they are even weaned off the cows. Gonna be slim pickins for them this time!!!

Wonder what's up as I know of several folks here that have way more heifers than bulls this time around?

Oldtimers used to say a heifer year is a grass year (wet year)......

Maybe....but where I'm located we've grass and clover all yr long pretty much. Oh...it's still $$$$$ on the hoof for sure.

I don't know if it is true but an old time Vet told me that cows that are bread at the first of their cycle will have 90% bulls and the cows bred at the end of thie cycle will have 90% hiefers. He stated it was due to the acitidy of the cow affecting the sperm.

According to him if you keep and old bull and a young bull working together on small herds the young one will keep the old one working and you will end up with mostly bulls - - - if you keep only a mature bull who is quite capable of doing the entire job but likes to lay around in the heat of the day and work the evening shift you will end up with mostly hiefers.

I don't know if this is true but I always keep a yearling bull working with a two year old on my apx 30 cows and last year I only had 10 hiefers out of 34 calves. One of which was a free marten with a twin bull brother.

We had more heifers last year and did get a tremendous amount of late spring rain=grass. This year we're about half and half.

One bunch of our heifers is not quite through the first cycle, but there are 2 heifers so far for every one bull. :???: On our home raised 2's, the percentage of heifers is even higher, but not as many of those have calved yet either.

Guess what? We have absolutely no idea what our bull to heifer ratio is at this time. We'll know come fall when we sell the steers, sort replacement heifers, and sell the selling heifers. Que Sera', Sera'. Whatever will be will be.

Lucky you! :D Much as I like calving season, by the time the end is rolling in, I'm ready to be done.
We still have about 50 to go, but in less than two weeks we brand. So the end is in sight.
