We hauled 10 head of cows for a friend to Belle Fourche Auction yesterday with our 2011 1-ton Dodge diesel dually pickup and aluminum trailer. Our friend hauled 10 head with his 2012 (or maybe 2013) Ford diesel one-ton single wheeled pickup and his aluminum trailer. We got the SAME fuel mileage. Exactly.

You forgot to tell the rest of the story. What was the mileage?

I thought that would be coming. Nothing to brag about. Just an interesting comparison. 11.3.

That's probably about the same as my 2012 Ford F350 diesel single-rear-wheel gets while pulling a loaded trailer.

My 2012 Ford F350 gas pulling 10 cows in a steel trailer would get about 9 mpg but I buy my fuel for $1 a gallon less. Just not a lot of difference in any of them.

I guess we were pleased that our dually got the same mileage as a single wheeled pickup. Plus ours has a heavy flatbed. Trying to be optimistic...
for all the pulling we do with that pickup, he would never be satisfied with
a gas one. He loves the power.... and it never goes anywhere without
pulling some kind of trailer.

My service truck is a 2001 Chevy 3500 HD that pushes the scales down at slightly over 15,0000#

I am a very conservative driver and can squeak out 14 MPG at times but normal is around 12 MPG.

If I put a backhoe or dozer behind it I get around 10 MPG - - - it might be gas but with an 8.1 liter V8 and a 6 speed Allison transmission it has all the power needed! As pointed out above gas is about $1.00 per gallon cheaper around here as well.

I had the same body on a 1989 C30 with a 350 CuIn gas engine and a Turbo 400 tranny ( 3 speed ) and I never got above 12 MPG and when pulling heavy equipment it would drop to around 6 to 8 MPG and did not have nearly as good of brakes as the 2001 ( disc brakes all the way around )

I feel the transmission is the main reason the economy is so good as when in lockup in 6th gear I'm only turning about 1,200 RPM at 65 MPH - - - the old truck would have been at about 5,000 RPM at that speed.

With the price difference in fuel, the abundance of crappy diesel, the cost of Power Service, batteries, etc., I don't think I'd buy another diesel pickup.....unless it was priced too low to resist, and then my Spidey Senses would kick in & ask if I had 6-10 grand to drop on the engine.....

I think that for what I do, the gas burner would probably be the most economical to own & operate.

You don't have mountains to climb. Mr. FH is a power fanatic. He's not into dollars and cents (sense).

In his defense, he would agree with you except in his situation. And he's already got the diesel, 2011 with 35,000 miles on it. He said that it would be his last pickup (but he's said that before... :p ).

We keep getting letters from auto dealers saying "We want your 2011 pickup. We'll give you 110% over book for it."
I told him we should go drive theirs and have them make us a deal. :D It would have to be 110% of what we paid for it new.

He only uses the dually for hauling. He has other things for well, other things. :D

my bet is that your book value is different then their book value and a trip over would end up being waste of time....

we often consider retail to be book value.. and they want wholesale minus any dings ect.. (auction price)

BTW,.. my f-350 V-10 $X$ Dually with KUV covered utility box. gets about 12 highway, and around 8 towing.... :? the KUV box is like an anchor..

thankfully it is more useful sitting and when it has to tow or plow,.. I get paid for it.. :)

bigger engine doesn't always mean worse gas mileage.. an engine sized f0r your needs is always a better option.

Oh yeah, it's a Come-on for sure! I spent 30 years in advertising so I'm pretty sure when receiving mailers like this it is to get you into the dealership. I just thought it might be entertainment on an afternoon when there was nothing else to do.
