Irrigation systems

Since we aren't getting any rain and the future don't look too bright I am looking to buy an irrigation system, but don't know much about them. I am looking at used systems since I can fix just about anything. I have an artesian well that flows about a 2 inch stream of water and a pond to hold the water in the center of one hay field. And my other hay fields have a deep stream of water that never dries up that I can pull water from. Each field is 50-60 ac. Last time we had a drought we produced about half of our normal hay crop and it was really hard to make it through the winter. What do some of these systems cost and what systems do you guys or gals use? I really hate dry condition and wish I could see mud for a change. We normally get 30-40 inches of rain a year, but here lately it's been 20-30 inches. Maybe if Jersey would pay the preacher more money he would let it rain.

I never thought I would have to get one of these here in East Texas, but I guess you have to do something to get by in dry times. :?

a tornado blew through here last year, and you could buy two or three sytems real cheap, then mix and match to make one good one. lot of work but still cheaper than a new unit.

talk to your insurance man, he may be able to track down a few pivots that have been damaged.

If you lived closer i'd truck a load or two of mud over to ya',been raining for what seems like forever here.Everything's filled up and overflowing.Lots of wheel line pivots here, not being used.People don't want to pay the electric bill to pump water.

I would say your first step is to make sure you have water rights for the water you are talking about. I don't know your state laws so that might not be an issue. As far as used pivots and pumps you can spend any where from probably $10,000 to $30,000 depending on the condition of the equipment. Another thing to think about is your power source. Electric or diesel or natural gas, lots of options but none of them cheap. Good luck with your project.
