My daughter is looking to replace her daily driver. She travels about 70 miles round trip to work and mostly the night shift. Her 2000 GMC pick up is getting to be a high miler and she wants4X4 as lots of morning coming home she beats the snow plow.
Anybody driving one?

What else as along this line do you like?

Can't be a Ford as that is what her ex drove. :?

Friends don't let friends drive Jeeps. Better a Government Motors product than a Jeep. Word my nephew got when he was stationed at Ft. Benning was that the Liberty was about as useless a 4X4 as you could find. He pulled several Liberty's out of mudholes with his old Chevy.

I'd stay away from it.

I've been told by a few mechanics that the Jeep is cheep. Not sure why but they were convincing enough I don't want one. :? How about you give her your unit and then go out and buy Tam a new one. Problem solved and two happy women.

we love our old 98 jeep grand cherokee laredo, 300,000 k and stillgoing strong. that being said you could'nt give me a new small jeep, liberty, compass or patriot. their just built to cheeeeep and basically on a car chasis.

you don't know how much this pains me to say but have two friends and both of my sil's have bought hyundai tucons and santa fe's, very highly rated and their dealer support has been super. the kia counterparts are also rated well.
another neighbor bought the subaru forester, has had no issues. the chevy Equinox is actually based on the old tracker, and i'm sure everyone know's how i feel about them

We have friends who have the Hyundai SUV's and are on their 3rd one
and they have been very happy. The only thing, I don't think they are 4 wheel drive. Aren't the ones you mentioned front wheel drive instead of
4 wheel drive? (Foirester and Equinox?)

I'd buy her a Toyota 4-Runner or Hilander they are 4 wheel drive and fairly economical. I know people who buy nothing but them. Oh, my sister-in-law
has a Honda CRV and she's in love with that. It is nice.

all the one's that i mentioned or have had anything to do with were 4 wheel drive or all wheel drive.

BMR, keeping two ladies in your life happy warrants careful consideration

I just bought a liberty lattitude and love it. Only thing I don't love is the gas mileage- but I went from a 4 cyl to a 6. Had a Ford Escape which had MAJOR issues at only 47000 miles, and the service dept was so bad, I unloaded it fast. Tons of rebates on them, 100000 mi warranty. Rated to pull 5600 lbs, I do really like it. Goes through ANYTHING. Anyway, I am very happy with it. I also looked at Kia and Hyundai, but the prices on those were WAY to high.

I wanted to add, that Jeep and Fiat were taken over by an Italian guy (story on 60 mins). He discussed at length how the cars were re-engineered to cut out the garbage and create a much better car. The Liberty is far different than the compass, patriot, etc.- dealer told me that they are under powered (they are 4 cyls) and not to go with them. The liberty is a different deal.

Toyota FJ Cruiser. I purchased a used '09 two years ago to use as my daily driver. It's a goofy lookin' thing, but it grew on me. I wanted an SUV, but refused to spend $35,000 for a used GM or Ford product. Since it is built as a factory on-road/off road vehicle, the only thing fancy about it is the drive train... A lot of selectable features for 4wheel drive. I've only used it through one winter with any snow, but it was one of the worst winters we have had and it got me from point A to B safely. One other thing, people complain about gas mileage. While it may not be great for a 6 cylinder, I came from a 5.3l truck that was costing me $80 a week in gas. With the FJ I can go a week and a half between fill ups and it's been costing around $45.

Toyota 4 runner is a similer vehicle and she would like it. We had one that my wife drove for a few years. We put about 75000 on it and the only thing we did was change oil and new tires. We got rid of it to get a sequoia as we hatched out another kid and needed more room. :D

My wife and I bought a 2004 Jeep Liberty for our son who is at Florida State. It is a nice driver with a very tight turning radius but it is not a Jeep. On the automatic windows, the motors keep going out so be prepared to fix them about every 6 months if you use them. There was a recall on this and if you get a new one the problem may have been fixed. Also, it is not not a jeep transmission. It uses the Plymouth Voyager transmission that is not a very strong tranny. It will not likely last past 100,000 miles so be prepared to either get rid of it early or to have to replace it. Also, the 6 cylinder motors run great and are probably a 200,000 mile engine, but they do use oil. Even one in good condition is going to use about a quart a month so you have to keep an eye on it or you will run low.

Hope this helps. The Cherokees and Grand Cherokees were better vehicles. The others are Chryslers and not really Jeeps.

Go with a half ton Dodge like Katrina got. Go with the 5.9. Decent gas mileage, full sized, and about the same money as the Liberty.

I could never recommend a jeep again and I was a diehard jeep fan..

my last Jeep 95 grand Cherokee orvis is still on the road, i sold it at about 215,000 with no problems..

I bought a new grande Cherokee in 05.. and it has been nothing but a problem...

most of the time it isn't the mechanical problems ,,.. but electrical sensors.. that think they have a problem..

any long distance travel sets off the 4wd malfunction light.. any off road just confuses it beyond hope.. and it takes an expensive scanner to clear those codes.. (Dealer)

at 68900 miles pretty much the entire drive-line locked up.. almost $8000 in parts.. most were covered... but I was pretty worried..

it is no longer a true 4wd either one wheel slips crap that will not honestly lock into 4 low.. so I am constantly getting stuck in places a two wheel drive gets through..

with all that said.. if you offer me a decent price,... I will drive the gutless piece of crap out... (it sure looks nice though) and the heated seats are great..

and anyone looking for help with the codes and solutions give me a pm...

I like the old Cherokees but

the grande Cherokee,.. 2005 and newer is a fancy Chrysler car... with a ton of electronics that are full of glitches..

Smart girl!! My sis-in-law has the same thing and she loves it!

When I owned all the Ameritech stores in east central Indiana I had 10 S10 blazers and I loved them - - - still driving a 2000 - - - seems to go about anywhere and if I'm not pulling a trailer gets in the low 20s on the hi way for mileage. Now that Ameritech is no more I don't have display trailers to go to events so the only trailer I pull is a lawn mower trailer.

All of my store managers drove them and I had 4 Chevy Astro vans for the installation crews for Dish network and 2 S10 pickups - - - All had 4.3 V6 engines and all but the vans were 4X4 - - - I had no problems with any of then for about the first 200,000 miles and then only minor issues.

Now that I have grand kids I think I'm going to sell the 96 S10 pickup with 357,000 miles for whatever I can get and I'm going to get a crew cab S10 pickup so the babies are easier to get in and out. Same frame just a shorter bed and longer 4 door cab.

One of the Astro vans had 510,000 miles on it when the rear end went out and I parted it out.

It was neat on the first Wednesday of every month when all employees came to the headquarters store for 4 hours of training - - - nothing but a sea of white vehicles with red and blue decals.

We drove in one Memorial Day parade just to show off 10 blazers, 4 with trailers on ( the trailers I had custom made 8' X 24" with the right side top half opening to form an awning, office in the rear and a loveseat and large screen TV in the front - - - small generator so the TVs were showing all the good features of Dish Network and Ameritech) , 4 vans and 2 pickups all with signage of "Communications Depot" authorized Ameritech dealer and the local phone number of the store it came from with me leading them on a SE Goldwing flying both the American Flag and a USMC flag.

It was quite a sight but did not seem to bring in any extra business and was a lot of work ( and overtime pay ) so we never did it again.
