That is Goose. He is twelve years old, and the best cutting horse on the ranch.

The Gelbvieh influence in our herd is fading pretty fast. We get most of our bulls from a commercial producer, but the bulls we get are sired by registered Angus. Once in a while some of the bulls have slight scurs showing but they are too good of bulls not to buy. :wink:

Well your breeding program seems to be working by the look of your heifers . I know how you feel about herefords ,but we have started using hereford bulls on are simmy angus cross cows and I must admit the results have been pretty impressive ! On the heifers from this cross what do you think of crossing them with a geliveh or balancer bull. just a Idea. I really liked your red angus gelbliveh cross calves sired by those simmy bulls.

You could probably get some extra pounds from that combination but I would definitely consider the resulting animalsl a terminal cross, to be sold as meat and not kept as replacement heifers. Our weights have gone down a bit since we no longer have the Gelbvieh influence, but the size of the cows has moderated and their disposition has improved. I like just having as straight of an Angus herd as we can, even though there are still a few white faces to be seen. Calving troubles are virtually non-existent and there are lots of heifer calves worthy of keeping for replacements to make into future cows. The steer calves sell pretty well, too.

Gelbvieh definitley put on pounds......but I'd take a few less pounds rather than being run up the fence by a snorty momma. Let's see.....Gelbvieh cow attack #1 caused a broken wrist which has left the left arm somewhat impaired. Gelbvieh cow attack #2 was a little more humiliating....she ran me in a snowbank, pawed me good and proper until my glasses were lost, my coveralls were ripped so badly that my bare skin was exposed and after she kissed me by running her head against mine, all I got was a mouth full of cow hair. I've only got three of those mommas left, but they are not on my favorite list.

It always seems the snorty ones raise the best calves , but I'll take a little smaller calf over a hookin any day. where are you in Iowa Sundancer. I'm between burlington and Ft Madison.
