I just got all my 1st cutting alfalfa put up and will start on 2nd here in a week or so. Off of 1 field of 140 acres i got a little over 3 ton an acre. Im going to use this to feed to my cows for the winter and sell everything else. I also put up one quarter of new alfalfa with a very fine stem and it tested at about 140 RFV. Im looking for a market for it, and wondering if anyone knows of someone that needs some quality hay. I plan on building my hay sides on my flatbed so i can haul if need be.

Congratulations on your hay crop. You should be rewarded for it.

How are your cattle doing now? I would think the hay you have to sell should take a bite out of the difficulties you had with your cattle this spring. So it goes in the ranching business.

We are getting close to a ton to the acre on our haycrop, but we have almost no alfalfa left either. The freight would kill us from your area to here.

oh cows are doing good...may 20th was one of the best days of my life. They went to pasture! Ive got 2 pastures rented and one hasnt been touched yet so im gonna rotate them to that one here in a couple days.

But my alfalfa has been the most learning experience. Last year i had about 500 bales of 2nd cutting alfalfa. It tested in at 180 RFV. I could have sold it rite out of the field at $80/ton but figured i would wait because no hay was around. It got to be winter and i started getting nervous and i ended up telling a guy that if he took it for $75/ton he could have it. In the mean time i ran an ad in the greensheet and it was published after i already had it sold. Im not lieing i had over 60 calls on it in a couple days. People were hurting bad around here. I ended up selling it and the guy decided after everything was hauled to his place that he wanted to take a 1% off for moisture absorbed into the bale. It was a huge deal but the alfalfa already shrunk down about 100-150 since the summer so i was getting both bad ends of the deal. I promise i wont ever do business with him again. I had a few guys after the fact tell me they would have giving me over 100/ton for it. There was some alfalfa just 20 miles from here at an auction for 115 ton. Oh the lessons they dont teach in school.
