I went to the vet's office this morning to pick up some scour treatment. I sure was ticked off to hear that Kaopectate is no longer available, as it was very helpful in slowing those raging bowels down when calf scours would hit.

Does anyone else know anything about why it is no longer available, or if it is true for sure?

Also, what would one replace it with in a natural beef program? Guess what, the vet's assistant said to feed the calf canned pumpkin. Yup, she wasn't kidding.

I guess I'll look kinda funny walking out of the grocery store with a couple of cases of canned pumpkin . . .

Oh, yes, and I also found out that Calfspan boluses are no longer available either. That used to be my silver bullet for scours - one Calfspan bolus, one pack electrolytes (Lifepak or Calflytes HE) in 2 liters of warm water with one glug of Kaopectate, 2 cc. Cronyxin and 3cc/cwt Borgal.

With a timely treatment, it was darn near a perfect solution to bacterial scours and headed off serious troubles in something like a Rota-corona scour.

Dang!!

Prob some drug head used it the production of ' meth' somewhere in the world OR it killed a lab rat somewhere.

You can't even buy a good cold remedy that will work over the counter!!

I did a google search and from what I can see they are reformulating Kaopectate. When it's back on the shelves there'll be three versions.

But they say that you can get Kaopectate caplets. Wonder if the caplets would work???

Don't see why not?

Just get'em down their throat like you'd do a bolus. Give'em a good drink afterward to dissolve it all.

Should work like a charm.

Here's one good thing about being rural evidentally our vets run out last. Not the demand to keep up with the supply. :D
