We have a group of kids (by kids I mean probably 20's) on crotch rockets that go by are farm, or did. They get to the top of the hill and see the horses in the pasture by the road and start beeping horns and reving engines. That causes the horses flight response to kick in. A cop often sits in our driveway because people speed past our farm (30mph speed zone), I mentioned the bikes and said one is going to get knocked off. He said he has no sympothy and that they keep out running the cops.

Just remember it's a free country.I'm sure a few times of the bikes going by the horses won't give them a 2nd look.We live right by the train tracks here and the train blows the whistle right by our barn it can be full of horses and they don't even look up.Sounds more to me like the horses are more tolerable than you are. Before I would take out a gun for something so petty I would just move the horse's.I can tolerate kid's as I was one once.

Talk to the Mom's and Dad's of these kids...or better yet the kids themselves .

If they come by @ at reg time....have your truck parked in such a way that they have to slow to get by you....then step out and have a word or two.

Popping off shots will get your arse locked up if a stray bullet ends up in the wrong place.

...or they (the body-bag riders) could actually file charges against you...........

a tractor pullin a large implement may get 'em to stop if yall would like a word with 'em

Acting like that just gives the anti-gun people justification in their arguments.....and in this case...they'd be right!

Your wife sounds like a smart lady...listen to her!

I would think if you could bring yourself to ignore it, your horses would soon ignore it too. The kids are most likely trying to agitate you. If they find out they are successful they will keep it up. If you ignore them them will soon get bored and find someone else to impress.

Ben, what im about to say may tick ya off but i could care less. You fired a gun because kids were spookin' your horses? Do you have kids? Grandkids? What would you do if they told you some idiot fired a gun near them while out riding motorcycles? If my kids told me that you'd wish the cops picked you up before i got there! Grow some testicles and try talking to the kids! Or thier parents! Or moving your horses! And you have just posted for the whole world to see (INCLUDING LAW ENFORCEMENT) exactly what you did in your own words!! I thought about contacting somebody in your area's sherriffs department myself. You make all of us look like jacka$$'$. As gun owners, as land owners, as horsemen and as ranchers. YOUR ACTIONS HAVE CONSEQUENCES! What happens if a low flyin' plane scares your cattle..... ya gonna buy an anti-aircraft battery and blast away? What happens if they store clerk at the supermarket gets lippy... ya gonna call in an air strike? Good luck with your anger management issues and hopefully your next post will show ya have the capacity to realize what a ridiculous, stupid, hot-headed, dangerous, life-threatening totally uncalled-for mistake you made. Unbeleiveable!!! And if your do see the giant error in judgement you made, tell us how your apology goes! If not, maybe a little coolin' off in a jail cell will teach ya something!!!

i agree with leanin h 100%

Shooting of a gun to hope to 'educate' some thoughtless, untrained stupid kids is not the answer. It is AN answer, but not THE answer.
You are treating the symptom - instead of the cause. These last three generations of Americans have been following Benjamin Spock's philosphies of raising children by "...not hurting their little psyche's..." by letting them do whatever their little ego's and hearts WANT to do! Oh my --NO -- don't discipline them . That wouldn't be FAIR now . would it? This is the primary reason we have problems in schools, problems in jails, problems in marriages, problems in businesses, problems in traffic, problems in every walk of life these days. We should just "Put up" with the inconvenience, and the noise, and the disturbance of our livestock, and the undisciplined, rude, impolite, thoughtless, angry, brats that are being whelped everywhere these days resulting in our jails being overrun with them, and our schools not being able to teach because of the uncontrollable, arrogant, spoiled, overbearing, snot-nosed delinquents who are running the teachers and the curriculums because their parents are AFRAID of their own kids - because they have never disciplined them , or taught them to practice SELF- discipline.

Get in touch with their parents (not that it would do a d--m bit of good!) and have a down-to-earth talk with them (with a few LEGAL terms and Attorney names suggested and thrown in for good measure) and "read 'em from the book!" That is much better than taking a chance of killing somebody, and find yourself counting the years before you get out of prison! Your action was as stupid as the the kids being overbearing nuisances!

So you think that our country (World) is in trouble? You"BE NICED!" right it is!! You and people who think like you do are the reasons for it! Self-discipline starts at home - and it should certainly start when the dear, sweet little darlings are about 3 months old! It is too ---- late after that!

You might wonder if I have enough experience to suggest some of these thoughts. You bet your life I have! Three sons, seven Grandchildren, Three GREAT grandchildren and another one on the way! Yes, I have had plenty of time and experiences to form a pretty solid philosophy about child-rearing. And shooting guns at them is not part of it - - even though I have considered it several times! But self-discipline and common sense ruled the day - and my kids were over-joyed! Me too!

I hope you can use the same kind of common sense and self-discipline before it is too late. Your situation is why they have law enforcement rules and regulations. Follow them. You are paying taxes for that service!

Can't get plate numbers, don't know who they are or who their parents are. Plus, we're not talking kids on dirt bikes, those go buy too but slowly Tthese are people probably in their early 20's on sport bikes.

FYI, I did go the "right"way about dealing with an ATV going through my fence, contacted the parents last fall, then recently had another problem and met with the Warden today.

SEEK HELP!!!!!!! You know I've found that if you have problems with alot of different people maybe there's a reason. I raise bucking horses across the road from a bunch of teenage boys with motorbikes-they're loud but it never crossed my mind to shoot at them. To proudly state that you did in a forum as public is this is well kind of beyond belief.

Does Ben specifically say that he shot at someone? All I can read is it says one is going to get knocked off. I think you people are assuming a little too much. Maybe I am wrong though...

NOW it doesn't...but when he first posted he stated that the took a shot as the last bike passed .

He's edited it as you can see on the post.

Prob a smart move on his part also as he's got his location on his sig line....and you NEVER KNOW who reads these things.

"Crap" will track you back home!

Ask them if they would pass several times for a couple days, soon the horses won't even take notice.

Makes sense now, I didn't get to read the shooting part.

yes, I confess that the message has been edited. I'm not going to try to justify any actions that could have happened. It was icing on the cake for the traffic that goes by our farm at the rate of speed. We have tried working with the cops, they do what they can, but they can only do so much. The other day he had one pulled over for 53 in the 30, she told the cop she worked for my grandfather many years ago, he told her "then you should know what the speed limit is". Within the next few years we may move a few miles away to our other farm that has more open acreage, it's also on a far less busy road. The house there needs a lot of works (1800's) and there is no barn or out buildings.
