Woke up this morning to the dog barking like crazy, so went out to investigate. She led me out along the edge of a field bordering the creek. When we got where she was taking me I got to see what the fuss was about..... one dead puppy, coyote standing over it that the dog chased off as we got there. The only other puppy from the litter is missing, I've spent most of the morning looking for it with the mother, with no luck. I'm assuming it got packed off, because the dog can't seem to track it down.
So it's been a pretty sad fathers day, the kids were pretty attached. I have to admit I'm rather upset about the whole deal myself.

Lately I know the feeling- but just like "Sams saga"- don't give up hope too early on the other pup... I get to hating them coyotes more every day..

Those cyotes will definetly haul off your pups, had an ole blue heeler mamma dog loose most of her pups till I figgered out what was going on,cyotes would sneak in about 3 in the morning and snatch em,damned varmints no wonder they are shot on sight .
good luck

PS Siver you oughta put some leg hold traps around those pups pen, might get lucky and snagg one of the worthless things

My luck I'll snag the bench. I just got back from another walk with the bench, walked about 1/2 mile up the creek and covered lots of ground. Brandy (the bench) cast about for scent the whole time, even found an old front leg off a coyote but no sign of the other pup. Maybe I'll walk south next time, but Brandy only seems to want to go north.
I know I wont be far from the rifle for quite a while, time to use a little "shock and awe".

Now all I need to find is someone who will let me hunt em for free! It's pretty bad here lots of land owners want to charge you to hunt yotes,P.dogs,Gophers,etc. Nothing more fun than spending a day makin sure the ol rifles still on.

Not many (any that I know of anyway) in this area that won't let you hunt coyotes to your hearts content...Lots of public land (State, BLM) too...

Quite a few calling them- and when we have snow, lots hunting off snowmobiles... A handful of folks I know are now using those paraplanes- and get quite a few with them....

But they never can seem to make much of a dent in them...When things get too bad the Dept of Livestock has a helicopter that comes in and I've seen them get 50-60 in a day easy...

I read an article once that coyotes can adapt and live anywhere- and repopulate low populations in times of good food- and it predicted that after the big nuke bomb goes off, and destroys life on earth- cockroaches and coyotes will survive...

So sorry to hear about the pup.  Hope you find the other one. I've never heard of a coyote taking a pup like that. Cats, yes.

Saw a show on TV about coyotes last winter. According to it, when coyotes are under a lot of hunting pressure they compensate with bigger litters. Go figure.

We had lots last fall, but the neighbour took care of them with the help of his trapper friend.  Along with my dog, but that's another story. Anyway, after we put the lid on his trapping, he got the guy to call and shoot. The final result was that he got the stupid ones, but the smart ones are still here. There is one big guy who didn't fall for it when he did the first "cleanup" five years ago, and didn't fall for it this time either. Both times he was left on his own until he found new coyote buddies, so he would come to our yard, sit on the driveway and pester the dogs. He's a bold one. He even showed up for a barbeque one afternoon! This spring he was back, but after a couple of weeks of driving Elsa up the wall he left, so I guess he's off starting the next pack.

The funny thing is that we've never had a coyote bother cattle here, even when the numbers were up. Must be the donkeys.

In Wyoming years ago, when you saw a coyote, he was on the next ridge heading out.

In W. Montana they were really bold. Would call your dogs off when you
were riding horseback and the dogs were with you. They called some dogs off that never were seen again. We had a Catahoula Blue Heeler cross that was really an intelligent, tough dog. They would call her off and she would tease them and go off with them and then RUN back to us. She was really fast, but the coyotes would run up and knock her over, but she rolled up in a ball and when she came out of the ball, she was on her feet and really running. She played this game with them for years. She never lost. :P
