Make your computer work faster

hmmmmmmmm if it's so good why is it free? I checked out the website and it sounds really good. I'm assuming you have it? I also checked out AVG for virus protection from feeder's thread, it looks like I'd have to pay for "upgrades". Is it the same for this? Just wondering before I download it :) My Norton comes due in a couple weeks and I'm thinking about not renewing, and trying out AVG.

Ask ANYONE who works computers for a living and they will ALL agree that Norton's is probably the worst, most hacked security system around. It is bloated, it is a memory hog, and it will literally slow your system to a crawl. Most computer repair people, software people, and IT professionals use AVG. I have used AVG freeware for more than three years and have yet to get a virus. I also use Spybot Search and Destroy, and I use AdAware. Both are freeware. All the companies provide excellent free software for private computers. They will sell you an upgrade that will do more things, but most those things are not needed by the average home user.

The program I listed above does some spyware removal, it does some registry repair, it checks links for dead ends, and if you are a business the additional "Professional" version will be worth the money. But as a individual user, the freeware version is all you need.

I asked this before, but missed the reply if there was one.
How do I get rid of Norton (mine is free) and download AVG?

Thanks. And I'll look into the link you just posted, GP. Thanks.

We had Norton-- and had all kinds of problems- and then when we tried to get rid of it-neither I nor my wife, who knows a lot more about these new fangled machines than me, could get it off...Ended up having our computer man do it....

We then went with Norman- a program manager and firewall- which costs --- but is what he recommended....It works great- but I think costs about $30 a year....

I had norton and my puter tech lady told me to get rid of it for the same reasons listed here on other blogs and she told me to down load... avast home edition...Its free..She said she could sell me a antivirus program but this is better she said. And when i tried to remove norton it wouldnt let me.A virus had takin it over and wouldnt let it uninstall

If you open Nortons, and go to the Help line on the menu bar you should be able to see a "About Norton's" or something similar that will tell you what version you are using.

Thanks, Goodpasture. I will be sure NOT to renew Norton and download AVG and this other program you have posted here. Guess I'll see if I can get rid of Norton....

Far be in from me to give anyone advice about computers. However, I did check with the person I bought my computer from and he said if I just download Norton 2008, that it is much better than any of the earlier Nortons. He said they have used Norton for years with virtually no problem, but that the 2008 version was much better.

Since I didn't know how to do anything else, I downloaded Norton 2008.
I'm glad for the heads up GP. Thanks.

P.S. It's faster already. I'm happy!!!! :D

I use AVG on mine and it works well. It was recommended by a tech that does online checks and repairs monthly on my computers. give him a hollar at www.brimstonepc.com in 10 yrs I have found only 2 "computer techs" that actually knew what they are doing.

When we took a shuttle to DIA last August a group of people were on it with us. They started the chit chat about how cute my daughter was dressed. Their are other Gymboree fans out there! Soon it led to computer talk and what kind of protection we had on ours. I said I had Norton and hated it. Slowed down the pc. They all laughed and guess who they work for........yeah was I red. The tech guy assured me the new norton was much better and did not leave all the stamps on the system and take up as much space. However, I didn't go with Norton again.

A few years back I had some free time after gettin bucked off into a fence, and spent the time learnin these computer rigs. One of the things I learned is you don't have to pay to be protected!

If you want great FREE protection for your computer, check out the following. They are all free, work great, and will cover all bases when used together.
Avast antivirus, one of the best around, free or not.(AVG is good too)
Comodo firewall, easy to use and has a "learning"feature that customizes how it protects you.(zonealarm is pretty good too)
Spyware terminator,a must have these days with all the junk that can invade your computer.has a "real time shield" and an immunize function that blocks cr@p before it gets in.
Now if you want to go one step further, stop using Internet exploder as your web browser and install "Mozilla Firefox"It doesn't have all the security holes that IE does.Mozilla also offers an open source email client called Thunderbird.
these programs are all free and can be found with a simple Google search.

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS TO KEEP YOUR VIRUS DEFINITIONS UP TO DATE.You can't beat todays bug with yesterdays spray...

if you are interested in any other programs for your computer and are budget minded then check out snapfiles.com.they offer freeware apps that can do darn near everything. ;)
