Manure and lung cancer

Working with manure can drastically reduce chances of developing lung cancer, according to a report in The Daily Telegraph.

Dairy farmers are five times less likely than the general populace to develop the disease, New Scientist magazine reports.

The study found farmers typically breathed in dust that consisted largely of dried manure and all the bacteria that grew in it.

New Scientist said adults who had a greater exposure to germs than usual might build up a better resistance to bugs, including cancer.

"Some researchers are starting to wonder whether the higher incidence of certain cancers in affluent populations — including breast cancer, lymphoma and melanoma — might also have something to do with sanitized, infection-free living," the researchers said, noting the unexpected links between exposure to dirt and germs and cancer risk.

"If they're right, the implications are huge. If we can understand exactly what it is about some germs that has a protective effect, we should be able to reduce people's risk of developing certain tumors later in life by exposing them to harmless microbes."

. Be happy next time you are working in tha dusty corral :D :D :D

Well if that's true...or could be true...I won't complain "as much" next time we're working critters in the hot dusty manure packed fly infested stinky knee deep crappy correls!

I truly believe there is something to this. Our kids (and ourselves) are exposed to calf scours, calf crap, cow crap, etc etc. How many of us have been sick from e. coli ??

Town kids seem to be sick a lot of the time (MCG's friends, for example) and even if MCG brings it home, we rarely get sick. If we are exposed to bacteria, viruses, etc. we tend to build up an immunity.

The old Doc that delivered me- was already saying that back in the 50's and 60's....He was convinced that the rise in colds, virus's and infections was because of too much pasturization and non exposure to much of the diseases at a young age...

He claimed that back in the old days when you milked the cow- threw the big chunks that fell in the bucket out with your hand- then strained it thru a dishtowel and drank it-- you built up a lot more antibodies to all kinds of disease.....

Maybe I can sell them city folks some bull manure :D :D
good luck

When I was a little kid, about 6 or so, and we got our first K Mart in here...it was BIG and EXCITING stuff.

I remember seeing that they sold BlackKow in a bright yellow bag.

After asking Daddy, " what's that?"...he told me. But he made the mistake of telling me right in the middle of the store.

So, I chimed out, " You mean they sell cow shite in bags and people buy it?"

Being the little red neck child I was amazed that you could sell shite in a bag and people would actually fall for that and spend money on it!!!!

Even today the concept seems a bit odd!!

I have believed in this theory for years. All of this antibacterial baloney is just that. I will take it one step further and add this to the discussion. I believe that the old saying hard work never killed anyone has never been more true. It is my belief that if your internal body temperature is elevated slightly for brief periods of time it will actually kill the bad bacteria and virus'.
Too many people don't have to work hard or at all anymore and it really doesn't do them any good at all. While I'm on my soapbox I'll add, I have to laugh at all these people that pay big money to belong to gyms,my stepson included. People have too much time on their hands.

I guess most of ' us' who are outside with critters and the ' stuff' that goes along with that could be considered walking petri dishes!!

We were sure healthy back then alright. You know what the life expectancy was in the United States in 1915 ???

You'd better have good immunity then, cause if you got sick you'd likely die.

...and they have ridin lawn-mowers to cut grass on a 50' x 100' lot....
