Some big old calves, Soapweed. Might have to do the reds first next spring. Looks like the grass and mommas milk sure agrees with them!

Do you work the cows in the spring? Any anthrax shots, fly protection, breedback program?

Jassy must have shared some of that nice moisture with you as your country sure looks great. Good pics as usual.

How much older are those reds than your blacks?

They look a whale of lot better than the blacks. I'm sure age accounts for most of the difference.

Geez, some of those calves are quite big! A couple of them in the second picture already have the look of a bull.

And there's nothing prettier than red cattle on green pastures! Very nice critters, Soapweed.

Gotta luv Spring time in the Sandhills....Great lookin calves Soapweed, and Lilly's right...when it decided to green up...it REALLY greened up...now it can warm up...so that grass can grow up! Thanks

Doesn't look like the red calves will hurt you this year Soapweed. They are half grown already. So far anyway, do you feel you made the right decision to keep them over the winter, and calve them out? I know you talked about selling that herd once.

The red calves start coming at the same time as do our blacks. Every year I think the red ones will outweigh the blacks, but they don't. We do have more black ones to choose from, but our best load of black steers has always outweighed our load of red steers.

Another question: What is the breeding on those reds?

Our red cows are predominantly Red Angus, with a little bit of Gelbvieh thrown in. These cows are bred to Red Simmental, so the calves are half Simmental. I haven't kept any of the half-blood Simmental heifers for replacements.

No, we don't give our cows any vaccinations in the spring. We haven't put out any fly control for at least ten years. They use their tails a lot.

The jury is still deciding. It all depends on how good the grass holds out.
