modified-live

Every mod-live vaccine i have seen has a warning telling you not to give it to pregnant cattle unless they were given it as unbred heifers. And bovi-shield gold says not to give it to calves nursing on bred cows.

Bovi-Shield GOLD 5 Indications
Bovi-Shield GOLD 5 is for vaccination of healthy cattle to prevent respiratory disease caused by infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR) virus and persistently infected calves caused by bovine virus diarrhea (BVD) virus Types 1 and 2; and as an aid in preventing respiratory disease caused by BVD virus Types 1 and 2, parainfluenza3 (PI3) virus and bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV). A duration of immunity of at least 9 months has been demonstrated against IBR and BVD virus Types 1 and 2 disease. When administered intramuscularly, Bovi-Shield GOLD 5 aids in preventing respiratory disease caused by IBR and BVD virus Types 1 and 2. Bovi-Shield GOLD 5 may be administered to pregnant cattle provided they were vaccinated, according to label directions, with any Bovi-Shield GOLD FP® or PregGuard® GOLD FP vaccine within the past 12 months. Bovi-Shield GOLD 5 may also be administered to calves nursing pregnant cows provided their dams were vaccinated within the past 12 months as described above. To help ensure safety in pregnant cattle, heifers must receive at least 2 doses of any Bovi-Shield GOLD FP or PregGuard GOLD FP product with the second dose administered approximately 30 days prebreeding.

the interesting part of the article

The abortion data make a compelling case for reducing risk of losing pregnancies by replacing MLVs with inactivated vaccines, such as Vira Shield®, that protect against IBR, BVD and other important diseases and pose no risk to gestating fetuses.

Vira Shield will not cause IBR abortions because the virus has been inactivated and cannot revert to virulence. It has been proven safe over many years and can be used at any phase of the estrous or gestation cycle, regardless of the animal's vaccination history.

"Choosing Vira Shield for breeding or pregnant animals protects investments in reproductive programs, supports sustained pregnancies and eliminates undue risk to calf crops," Scholz concluded.

We used Vira-Shield for years and years. Even though there was a big push for modifiend live. We were always very pleased with it and never had
a problem that we knew of. The man that bought our cows used Vira-shield too, but there was so much pressure put on him that he did change to modified live...but it made him pretty nervous. He never saw that it helped so he went back to Vira-Shield.

I just never wanted to bring something on our place that we didn't have
to deal with already. We didn't have but very few abortions the whole time
we had cows. I mean like 5 in 20 years......our cattle were really healthy
and we just didn't have problems after changing a few things. Unbeliveable, I know, but we had huge problems from 1985-1993. That was more than enough to last a lifetime!!

The risk of causing abortions with modified live is around 1 to 2%. With modified live you get better longer immunity, so wiegh the risk: less sick cattle vs. 1 to 2% more open? Companies cant label products safe to use on bred stock or calves nursing breds becuase of this risk. But i know several operations that have gone completely modified live.

I think you could be right eatbeef-- because I know several ranches that I have worked cattle for that have used it for years-- with no problems... And had several old Vets with lots of experience with it tell me the same as you said....

I was scared of it- but it is what the majority of the calf buyers here want so for years I have used Pyramid 4 + Presponse or now Pyramid 5 + Presponse and not had any problems... And since they have approved it for younger cattle- I give it both at branding and preweaning--- and have almost completely done away with any sick calves at weaning....
I also give Vision 8/Somnus + Spur -- and one thing I learned from the local feedlots is that I throw a couple weeks supply of Smart-Lic Stress-Lic tubs in with the calves when I wean them....Both the local feedlots use them with unweaned calves thrown into the lots- and I'm convinced they are well worth the money....
