Have you seen Food, Inc., the Oscar-nominated documentary exposing the inner workings of our industrialized food industry? As I recently re-watched the film's interviews with experts like author Michael Pollan and took in the truths about how our food is grown, treated and processed, I was reminded of what a powerful influence this movie has been on how I, and probably many of you, make food choices and think about food. (If you haven't seen the movie or want to watch it again, tune in to PBS on April 21. Check pbs.org for TV schedules in your area.)

So when I interviewed director Robert Kenner by phone last week, I was curious about how he's changed his eating habits since he made Food, Inc.

"Now my diet is a political act, not a personal act," he told me.

That's a pretty powerful way to think about an act we do every day. You can vote three times a day when you pick up your fork!

Here are 5 ways Kenner said he's changed his diet and some tips to help you make the same changes in your diet:

1. Choose Sustainably Raised Meat & Poultry: Kenner said he was a pretty good eater to begin with, but after the movie, "eating industrial food," specifically mass-produced meat, didn't feel right to him. He still eats meat, produced sustainably, but he eats less meat and less frequently than he used to because he doesn't think the planet can sustain it and because it's better for his health. Some research suggests that pasture-raised meat and poultry are richer in omega-3 fats and conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) than those raised on grains. 2. Grow Your Own Food: Kenner has a garden at his home where he grows some of his own food. Growing your own food is not only cheaper, it's healthier because, if you're anything like me, you'll be inspired (and committed) to eating all the vegetables you grow. Plus, fruits and vegetables picked at their prime ripeness have more nutrients.

The biggest message I took home from this movie was the power and control certain companies have over our food system. Cargill, Smithfield, Tyson, Archer Daniels Midland, Monsanto, etc. These are the companies that benefit for increasing regulations.
 
Looks like we have missed it if it was on.

The concept of voting three times a day when we pick up a fork is something that appeals to me. That's why I'm a meat and potatoes kind of guy. :wink: I also make the choice to eat more dairy and eggs when I can, but I don't always have these items around. Beef is something I have a constant supply of in the deep freeze.

I helped at the first branding of the season today. The main course of dinner was pork. In the form of both ham and pork chops. Mashed potatoes and gravy, green bean casserole, relish tray with pickles, pickled beets, and two different kinds of cheese, with apple, rhubarb, chocolate cream or lemon merenge pie for dessert.

Oh, and the gals didn't forget the ice cream for the pie! :wink: :D
