It had been a long time sense we were on The Cedar Mountain trying to out smart "The Wild Bunch." We had the 4-wheelers and covered a lot of country checking out where the mustangs were. We found about thirty head in the head of a cove about a mile from the road. We figured there were three directions they could escape our efforts. Gary circled to the east while Earl and I covered the north route. We didn't think they would climb straight up the mountain, but some of them did.

These were the closest to us when we started the sneak.

After a mile of hiking these two were still unaware we were in the area.
When the saw Gary, they spooked down the far side of a small ridge.

I hurried around the ridge to cut them off looking up the country. I was a little embarrassed to find them watching me from across the draw.

Photobucked doesn't like Earls camera.

About fifteen head came our way. I guess we will have to try that area again.

Earl took these pictures. I did a lot of cussing and made a lot of promises to myself about charging camera batteries. On the way back to the 4-wheelers these three were headed for water. They didn't know we were around. They were curious when they saw us and came closer checking us out. When they got a smell of our "Old Spice" they forgot all about water, and headed back up the country.

Interesting photos and story! Thanks!

Does anyone ever try to capture those animals and make working stock out of them?

Big Muddy said it all. I'll just expound a little of something I don't know a lot about. In the old days, 1950s a lot of people chased mustangs in a varety of ways. Trucks, Motorcycles, airplanes and saddle horses. Some were tamed and trained to be good useful horses. Most were sold at meat horses. They are usually smaller than todays quarter horse but tougher. They have good feet and can run forever. A few years ago I read where a mustang won an endurance race.

Then Wild Horse Anne from Nevada started a crusade that put an end to just anyone chasing mustangs. Laws were passed and us citizens are not allowed to capture or harass them, under the penalty of law. Now the BLM has control of managing them and they do the chasing and harassing, via helicopter and water traps. The BLM attempts to sell and adopt them to qualified people. However I've read where there over 40,000 in holding pens being feed at tax payers expense.

Corrections or other views are welcome.

Fascinating stuff and I had no idea. BMR hit the nail on the head though with his comments. If your country out there was populated by Venezuelans, there wouldn't be a wild mustang to be seen....they'd all be roped and working on someone's ranch. These folks are horse crazy down here and while they love a big quarter horse, most are smaller, tough horses that really know how to work.

I've had to move my cattle many times while my main guy is on vacation and my favorite mare does all the work for me.....that's to say, she knows more about what's going on than I. :D

Thanks Mustang for those pics and the story. Drop me a PM next time to you post more pics of those fascinating animals living wild in the US.
