We haven't seen many mustangs at Eight Mile Spring sense last fall. From what I've heard the road across the old lake bed has dust pockets that you could loose a pickup in. When I was pulling my horse trailer to Eight Mile a few years ago, there were some of those bottomless pits that ran for a hundred yards at a time. I was relieved to find that the road was pretty good. When I got to the spring, there were a lot of trails pounded deep in the dust. There is plenty of water coming from the spring, so the horses should be happy.
From the looks of the tracks, I figured there must be a lot more mustangs around Eight Mile than I've seen there for years.
I headed down the country, stopping to glass all the places I'd seen mustangs in the past. When I got to where I could see Broad Canyon, I caught sight of a couple of paint mustangs,, about two miles away.
I drove up a two track road about a mile and hiked to the to of a bare knoll,, peeked over the top,, and about dropped my uppers. There were 55 head in a big flat,, thirty of which were paints. After slobbering over them for about ten minutes, I decided they were too far away to hike to today, if I was going to get over the mountain to Brown Spring in time to get any pictures.
When I got to Brown,, there were others ahead of me, so I changed my plans a little. Mr. Rydalch and I got some fair pictures. The "Humane Society Lady" that is doing a study on Mustangs, decided we had ruined her day,, so she left.
This band came in from the north and couldn't tell we were there.
These came from the west,,, and I'm guessing they smelled us or saw us moving around.
If they would have come on in.. we would have gotten some exceptional pictures. But,,, that's the breaks.
I figured it was time to leave and let them come in to water. I found a band about two miles up the road. When they saw the pickup,, they left the country. "Did you ever see so many paint mustangs in you life ???
