I've been out to the West Desert over 400 times sense 2004 to watch the mustangs. I have yet to see a real knock down bloody fight.
I have seen the results of such fights, where patches of hide 8 inches square have been torn off a mustang's hind quarter, but I have never
seen it actually happen. I think that most fights, the ones witness are practice runs for the main event.
 
We had a mare that had a pie plate sized patch of hide come off her withers. Just a small bite but must have pulled it away from flesh and it shed it's self. Took awhile to get her healed up.
