I finished breakfast in jig time and did yesterday's diary before going outside to great the new day.
Dad and I saddled our horses, Crackerjack and Sassy, and went out in the horse pasture to match up cows and calves. We had to get in three cows to milk them out. We loaded up one lonely calf on Sassy to bring him in, but my horse was feeling her oats and bucked him off. In trying to rope the calf, I made a fool of myself and blew about ten loops. Dad ended up catching him.
Lloyd and I pulled on half a stack in the first yard and fed the cattle around here. We then went down east and loaded up another half-stack. In winching the loaded sled through a drifted gate, we tore out a box corner. Dad picked us up on his return from fixing the phone line, and we came in to dinner.
I rode Dad's horse and Sybil rode Sassy up north to round up the drys. Dad and Sybil sorted out some heavies, and Lloyd and I put new leathers on the middle windmill. We then finished feeding and brought home a stackbutt for tomorrow.
Sandra helped Dad get in the heavies from the south lot. I tied up some cows to let their calves suck. We did up chores and came in.
Mom and Dad went to Martin for an REA essay contest and supper. [Dad was a director on the local LaCreek Rural Electrification Association for about 25 years.] Sandra, Sybil, and I stayed home with Nancy Jean. It takes about that ratio (3 to 1) to handle her.
Old Ichabod, the duck, is still kicking. He cannot fly as yet, but the girls permitted him to take a swim in a tub today.
