My journal entry for Friday, February 16, 1968

I arose at 6:00 and had breakfast with Dad and Lloyd. Even my sisters managed to roll out earlier than usual. We left home early as we had to be at chorus practice by 7:45.

We went over to the gym and practiced the songs for tomorrow night. I hope we do better for the talent show than we did today.

Typing and part of Geography was spent holding the ladder while Mr. Smith changed a light bulb in the gym. After this little job was completed, we charged upstairs just in time for a Geography test. I didn't do too well—getting about in the B minus bracket.

Mr. Phipps and Maggie Harner accompanied Mr. Card to Geometry class. They judged our geometric designs, with Ken getting a dollar for 1st prize, me winding up with 50 cents as 2nd prize, and Mary Robertson with a quarter for 3rd prize. I think if I'd been doing the judging, Mary would have received 1st because she did a lot of work, John 2nd for a real exact design, and Ken 3rd with his very unique design.

Biology was used as study hall as I am kind of at a standstill on my project. I need a backboard and an inspiration before it will get anywhere.

A tuna casserole, buns, and cookies made up our dinner. I got five books on the bookmobile over noon hour.

In English we read out of our Literature books, and I helped Mr. McKay work on a bulletin board in Drivers Ed. As Mr. Nelson is a qualified Drivers Ed teacher, he took Ken and Ernie to Gordon with him to pick up the queen's gift for Homecoming.

We killed the rest of the afternoon getting ready for tonight. Also a pep rally was on the agenda. All members of the varsity team were compelled to give speeches. I slaughtered mine and felt rather conspicuous.

After school, the kids from the Green Valley [our ranch] went down to Grandma's. We had supper there and got ready for the game.

The Merriman girls won volleyball by a very slim margin. Our junior high boys lost by one point (48—47). Us fellows [on the varsity] really loused up, losing by 80—42. Harrison has some pretty nice guys, so I don't mind losing to good sports quite so bad.

After the game, the ceremony came off. I had to escort one of the four candidates for queen, but lucked out with Linda Goodwin. Bill Marrs was king and Linda got queen, so I escorted Jan Smith off the stage and we danced (I don't know how to dance).

Dad told me to stick around school, as he had to practice a song anyway [my dad (Bob), his brother Stan, and their cousins Garould and Joy Fairhead sang in a male quartet for many funerals through the years]. I did hang around the school, for about twenty minutes. Aunt Lois came up to me and said I ought to be ashamed of myself just sitting on the bench with a whole bunch of girls on the other side of the gym. She sounded like she might "insist" on doing something about it—so I made like I was going over there—and then lit out for home.
