My journal entry for Friday, February 2, 1968

Mom hollered for me to arise and greet the new day at 6:00 this morning. I have not yet caught entirely up on my sleep from Tuesday's long night, so it was 15 minutes and three calls later before I finally stirred myself into action.

I had breakfast with Mom, Dad, and Lloyd, and then crammed for a while on a test-to-be in Geography. After Sandra and Sybil had their breakfast, we headed for school.

As Mom had to take Sybil to the doctor later today, we took the new pickup to school. It is much more roomy and has more style than any of our previous pickups. I am going to try my darndest to keep it that way.

We arrived at school a little after 8:00. Chorus went by without too many sour notes.

Typing started out smoothly enough. About midway through, Ernie Bennett remarked, "How do you like the new law that just passed?" I asked as to which law that was. He replied that it was now illegal to drive a tractor until you are sixteen years of age—unless, of course, your dad owns the place. This, in my estimation, is a needless law that will surely do no good and will probably destroy some boys' incentives to work. I stated my opinion, and Ernie immediately agreed. McKay, who had overheard the conversation, disagreed immediately. As far as I was concerned, he made no legitimate excuses but tried to pursue weak points like: a lot of kids under sixteen are hurt every year, and this will probably cut down on child labor. This is not the first time he and I have disagreed and probably not the last time either, but I don't think he has got the right ideas—on a lot of things.

Mr. Nelson came across with the promised test. It was not overly hard but it could have been easier. A bonus question was: How much are 65 Kennedy half-dollars worth? The answer--$32.50. Rather tricky, don't you agree? I lucked out with 90% on the test.

Mr. Card gave us a big rough assignment in Geometry; however, I got it done during school. I typed another page for my Science project, and went out to the bookmobile before dinner.

Grilled cheese sandwiches adorned the plates this noon, and I did Geometry during noon hour.

The afternoon chugged slowly by. We read Literature during English, and messed around during Driver's Ed. McKay took Ken and Vonda driving. We studied a little, went to a pep rally, and were dismissed at 3:30. There was no basketball practice tonight as the girls played volleyball.

I came home, changed clothes, and went down to the barn where Dad was working. I lugged old junk harness, wagon wheels, and other would-be-antiques to the "grease shack." We worked in the barn some, did chores, and came in for supper.

Dad went to a junior high ball game, so Lloyd and I batched. I'm not much of a cook.

After my father was killed and Mom remarried I was to milk the 4 cows and feed the animals ( horses, chickens, pigs and cows ) collect the eggs and be ready for the school bus as I was the oldest child.

One day Mom had to call me several time to get me moving. The next night she put a glass of water in the frig - - - she called me once the next morning and when I did not get up she poured one drop of ice water in my ear.

She was never able to sneak into my room again!!!! That will make a lasting impression!
