My journal entry for Friday, January 26, 1968

I moseyed out of bed this morning at 6:00, had breakfast, and did a Driver's Ed assignment. I packed my "basketball bag" and got ready for school.

We arrived at school a little after 8:00 and had a "stingy" band practice, about ten minutes in all. Typing went off like clockwork, and in Geography we had it pretty easy. Both Shirley and Jeana were sick (which was 40% of the class), so Mr. Nelson orated on the differences between the Sandhills and the Kearney country. He also talked of irrigation in Nebraska compared to that in the Sahara.

A three-page assignment was given in Geometry, and we "supposedly" worked on Science projects in Biology. I got my Geometry assignment done during this time, as I couldn't do much more for a while on my science project.

A tuna and egg mix on toast was the main dish for dinner. Cousin Brad and Mr. Card had a little "difference" concerning some beans Brad couldn't get down. Brad was obliged to sit there most of the noon hour trying to get the beans headed down the right passage.

We read in our Literature book during English class, and in Driver's Ed, I got to drive. Due to a change in schedule, McKay can only be gone for 40 minutes. He rearranged the set-up so I rode with Vonda Goodwin. I'm happy to say there was no time during her driving when I really felt "uneasy."

After school, I went out to Uncle Stan's with Ken, and Deb stayed in town with Sandra at Grandma's. We put on a haysled tire, and goofed off until 5:00, when we had a good supper of hamburgers and other accessories. We were squeezing the clock pretty hard and left the JO at 5:25 for the basketball game. We were supposed to be on the bus at 5:30, and I still had to change clothes. I drove Uncle Stan's pickup to town as Ken doesn't have a driver's license yet.

I had my clothes changed and we left Grandma's at 5:35, just in time to catch the bus. We crowded on and headed for Martin, picking up Neva Day, Carole Day, and Mary Robertson at their place, and John and Sarah Fairhead and Vertrie McLane at the JL turn-off. We proceeded to Martin and arrived with a couple of minutes to spare.

We put on our basketball clothes, and I played a little in my first game since "grade school days." I didn't play over two or three minutes, but at least got in free for the game. The score came out 71-41 in Martin's favor.

We got all showered up and watched a game between Martin and Rapid City, with quite a few refreshment breaks also.

Ken, John, and I renewed our acquaintance with a camping buddy, Davy Jones. Uncle Stan's and Uncle Joy's went up to Jones' after the game. Our outfit was already in Merriman, as Dad had gone to a telephone meeting, so I rode back on the bus. We came home and went to bed.
