My journal entry for Friday, June 7, 1968

Dad, Lloyd, Doug, and I left for the Leach Place on a typical fencing mission. The day was cool and cloudy, later turning to fog.

Between the river and Shadbolt's turn-off, we surveyed the damage done by last night's storm. There were many big gullies and lakes with hail along the edges. The south phone line was out. The Leach Place lucked out and was on the fringe area of the storm. However, we got at least four inches of rain so the valleys are mostly lakes.

We got in the horses, and I saddled Sassy. I put some yearling heifers that were in with the purebreds back where they belonged, and then moved all the yearlings to north of the branding corral.

We had lunch in the house and fenced some more. Hugh Jamison brought down some people that used to live at the Webster Place in the 1930's, so I talked with them for a while.

Our crew came home early at a little after 4:00. Dad, Mom, Sandra, Sybil, Nancy Jean, and I got ready to go to Curtis, Nebraska for a school reunion (Dad attended there in 1941).

We went in company with the JL gang—minus Sarah [the Joy Fairhead family]. Dad had to stop in Valentine for money. While stopped there, we met a canoeist named David Hutchison. [As far as I know, there were no canoeing outfitters in the Valentine area at this time.] I rode with Uncle Joy's the rest of the way to North Platte. We had supper at the Cowpoke Inn at Thedford. When we reached North Platte, we found rooms at the Triangle Motel, across from a drive-in movie.
