My journal entry for Monday, January 8, 1968

This morning, I piled out of bed at 6:30, pulled my clothes on, had a quick breakfast, and got ready for school. We took the car, having to plow through some snow drifts to get to town. Mr. Phipps was late for band so we only practiced for about fifteen minutes.

We were not fortunate enough to get to practice the play today, so had to have regular classes. Typing was uneventful, and in Geography class Mr. Card assigned a report to be due Wednesday. Mine is to be on Australia. Science was about as boring as usual, the main topic discussion being about genetics. Dinner time rolled around, and over the noon hour I worked on Geometry (this class is between Geography and Science). English and Driver's Ed were just "average." We mostly reviewed for semester tests to be given later in the week. The rest of the afternoon was supposed to be used for studying, but we boys blew the time just chewing the rag.

After school, we three Green Valley bound kids climbed into the car and headed home, stopping first for the mail and groceries. When we reached the oil strip it was about like glass. It had melted just enough that the asphalt was flooded, and then it froze. The trail roads had drifted pretty badly, and we got stuck just north of the bridge. After ten minutes of shoveling, the car came right out with Sandra driving, me pushing, and Sybil supervising, I guess.

At home, I changed clothes and downed a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Dad said there was a heavy heifer out in the meadow, so I rode out to get her in. By this time it was dark with a half-moon brightening the way. Still it was rather difficult to pick out the right cow, so I headed home to get a flashlight. On the way, I spotted another bull that had escaped through the "wire curtain" into the meadow with the heifers. I put him back where he belonged and went to the house to get a flashlight. Dad said to let the heifer project go and do the chores instead. Lloyd and I grained the bulls, took care of the horse, and went up for supper.

Today was another spring-like day with the thermometer getting up to 30 degrees. When I went out riding, I bundled up with my usual amount of warm clothes. I thought I was going to die of a heat stroke before the moonlight ride was over, but managed to make it through alright.

After supper, I sat around and watched The Lucy Show. While writing this diary, I also followed the plot of the show Family Affair.

Dad just called the Midwest Furniture store in Chadron to find out when our new carpet, davenport, and drapes (for the living room) would be ready to deliver. A week from Wednesday is the scheduled delivery day.

I'd better close this old book up for now and get to work on my Australia report.

''Davenport'' made me smile and think of my long departed father. That and many times the car was the ''machine''. It is funny sometimes when terms change over the years but people use the old ones from time to time. :)
