My journal entry for Monday, June 3, 1968

I got up just in time for breakfast and ate heartily. We then got tools and other equipment ready to go down to the Leach Place.

When we arrived at our south place, we put on a load of posts (our semi load supply is dwindling slowly but surely). [The posts were purchased from a nice guy by the name of Ray Foudray from Hollister, Missouri. They were Missouri cedar posts with the bark on, and they didn't last any too long. I think native Nebraska cedar posts stand the test of time better.] Doug and Lloyd started tearing out an old fence line. Dad did some checking and put out more back rubbers. I worked some more on the new fence—setting a few posts and stapling.

We worked until noon, and then all of us came home for dinner. Doug dropped off in town, to ride to the 4-H judging with Goodwins.

Jim Kroeger from north of Cody, held a 4-H judging this afternoon. All of our family went, and we suffered through an awful hot day. The JO outfit got lost on the way to the judging, and got several miles up into South Dakota.

Mom and Dad quit the "celebration" about halfway through and went to Valentine to get stuff to fix a tank.

I lucked out and won the judging. My score was 196 out of a possible 200. I judged all three classes perfect, but slopped up on my oral reasons for the last class of Angus bull calves. The other classes were Hereford heifers and Hereford bull calves.

A bunch of us Merriman boys crowded into Uncle Stan's car to go home. I went out to the JO to stay all night, for the cattle drive ahead. John Fairhead and the three Fair boys were also extra. The "Three Musketeers" stayed in the bunkhouse and talked about all night.
