My journal entry for Monday, May 20, 1968

We arose early and had breakfast. Sandra was sick so she stayed home in the morning. Lloyd, Dad, Paul, Sybil, and I headed for Uncle Stan's. We got in Sassy and Silver and loaded them on the back of the four wheeler. I drove this outfit with Lloyd and Paul as passengers. Dad and Sybil went out to the JL (Joy Fairhead's ranch) to get Gary Cadwallader to help ride.

Silver went into a fit and jumped clear over Sassy in the pickup, just before Jamison's turn-off. The rest of the trip to the pasture where we left the cattle was bedlam with the horses.

We caught the hobbled horses, and resumed our cattle drive. In Annett's north pasture, I was daydreaming along and got the thrill of a lifetime.

Skeeter Johnston had lost a .22 pistol on the fall cattle drive of 1963. I just happened to see the sun glistening off the handle, blinked a couple times (it was still there), and jumped off to pick it up.

Mom, Grandma Grace, Sandra, and Nancy Jean met us with dinner at a windmill just before entering the Leach Place (today is Nancy Jean's second birthday). Then the preceding four and I went back to Jensen's pasture to get the pickup. We loaded Spot and a sick calf and went back to the Leach Place.

Sandra and I went back to school for about an hour in the afternoon to make up tests. Mom took Paul back to Gordon. On the way home from school we watched the end part of a wedding at the Catholic Church. After a wait at Grandma's, Dad picked us up and we came home.
