My journal entry for Thursday, January 25, 1968

I woke up this morning at 6:30, feeling tired and stiff. I put away a good breakfast and got ready for school. We had to go early this morning for choir, as Mr. Phipps was back.

We sang "This is My Country" and "In an Old Dutch Garden." Mr. Phipps has been having back trouble. He is feeling better, but is still a little stiff.

School went by like usual this morning. However, in Science, we four boys wrote letters to the merchants of our fair city asking for donations to help put on the Science Fair. I wrote to 40% of Merriman's merchants—the Standard Station, Anchor Bank, Sand Bar, and the "Swirl and Curl" beauty shop.

We had the usual race to the cafeteria, and I came in second—Ken beat me. Chicken gravy on potatoes, biscuits, and a dandy chocolate cake made up the menu.

I messed around during noon hour, and when English class came along, the muscles of the four sophomore boys were needed. The school is changing from coal heat to fuel oil, so we helped haul in four big fuel tanks. We sweated and strained, and got a lot of gray paint rubbed off on us. We did quite a bit of stalling, trying to take up the rest of English class. By playing around outside a while and washing our hands five or six times, we managed it.

A big long assignment in English was waiting, and also one in Driver's Ed. McKay took Ken and Ernie out driving. I got English done but had to take the Driver's Ed assignment home. When McKay, Ken, and Ernie got back, we sat around and shot the breeze until school was out.

Tarsitano had charge of basketball practice again, as Coach Nelson was not back yet. Joe Poor Thunder joined our forces today, so seven guys will represent Merriman in the big game at Martin tomorrow. We had calisthenics 'til we were blue in the face, and then scrimmaged a while. I guess we are about as ready as we'll ever be for the game.

I took off a little after 5:00 and stopped at Grandma's. Uncle Stan, Ken, and Brad were there so we talked a while. I guess a bunch of Gordon boys were caught shoplifting at Hemingford recently. They took over $200 worth of stuff, and a seven-year-old boy turned them in. Fourteen were in the bunch and were all kicked off the basketball team. Only seven guys are left, so they are as bad off as Merriman.

I got home and had a few cookies and a glass of milk. Supper was soon ready and the waffles were cooked. Ronald Snyder was the guest tonight, as he and dad had been fixing the telephone line. They are all still shooting the bull at the table, and Sandra is about ready to bring out a platter of malts.
