My journal entry for Tuesday, February 6, 1968
I woke up at 6:30 with a trace of yesterday's flu. My throat was still a little sore, and I had a headache. After a good breakfast, I got ready for school.
We arrived at school at 8:15, but Sandra and I declined our "chance of a lifetime" to attend chorus. Neither of us was feeling quite up to par, and the chorus would probably sound much better without our hoarse voices anyway.
The sophomores did Lesson 78 in typing class. In Geography we were assigned a few pages to read with the possibility of a quiz tomorrow.
I lucked out as far as make-up work was concerned in Geometry. An assignment was to be due today, but Mr. Card told everyone to throw them away—he had enough grades down for us.
We had a short test in Biology. I "scraped by" with a 100%, which kind of made me feel good.
For dinner, Maggie turned out some good rice meatballs, potatoes and gravy, buns, corn, and apple crisp. I studied over noon hour.
We studied Literature during English, and studied during Driver's Ed and the rest of the day. I caught up on a typing lesson from yesterday and did some other work.
Ken got laid up yesterday. During basketball practice, he jumped up to retrieve the ball and came down wrong on Michael Davis' foot. The result was a badly sprained ankle that will not be ready or usable for about two weeks.
We have a game scheduled with Chadron Assumption in a tournament tomorrow night. I tried to use basketball practice to best advantage and get prepared for being the full-time center. I am afraid Merriman lost a key man that cannot be replaced very well when Ken got put out of commission.
Mr. Nelson turned us loose at 5:00. I stopped at Grandma's, picked up the girls, and we came on home.
Dad was in the house when we arrived. He took on the flu where I left off, and is not feeling too well. Nancy Jean's supposed case must have been a sort of "false alarm," as she is her usual cheerful self tonight.
We had fish sticks and some other delicacies for supper. Everyone else had lemon pudding for dessert. However, I used my portion as an appetizer before supper.
Dad and I listened to "Joe Pine" on KFAB radio for a little relaxation. The guy being interviewed spent his winters working and his summers hitchhiking. He really gets to see the country, and at a pretty reasonable cost, too.
