My journal entry for Wednesday, February 21, 1968
Today was Dad's birthday [he turned 45], but I was not home to help him celebrate. What's more, I didn't even have a present for him when I did get home.
I woke up to Grandma's calling at 7:15. We had a good breakfast of biscuits, eggs, and bacon before I moseyed on down to school.
Band was spent working on songs out of an overture book. At 8:25, we went to Typing class where we had about an average workout.
In Geography, we reviewed maps of eastern Asia for a map test to be given on Friday. Mr. Nelson was in an especially humorous mood. He has a very unique sense of humor, and it really stood out today. For instance, the map wouldn't roll up quite right so he used karate on it, and it went right up.
Mr. Card gave us a good sized assignment in Geometry. During Biology, we dug around in a formaldehyde solution and got out some grasshoppers that we had captured last fall. We just drew diagrams of them today, and are going to dissect them tomorrow.
Dinner today consisted of potatoes, beans, buns, and grapefruit sections. Over the noon hour, I got my Geometry done.
Mrs. Jess promised us all a big test in Literature for tomorrow. We also read a story.
We had to have class in Driver's Ed, but we got to work on posters to be due Friday. My theme is driving defensively.
When Phys Ed rolled around, Mr. Nelson called an "M Club" meeting. As I was not included, I continued work on my poster. A few minutes later, Ken came in and told me to "get my tailbone in to the meeting" as I was now in the M Club. It's an honor to be in with the bunch, but they are slightly short on finances. The treasure's report showed $38.50—but in the hole. We are to serve food at a volleyball tournament Saturday, but I think I will plead out of any active service.
Sandra, Sybil, and I headed for home after stopping at Grandma's to get our stuff, and then downtown to get groceries and the mail. I also looked all over town for a birthday present for Dad, but couldn't find one. I might give him a subscription to NEBRASKAland magazine.
At home, I grabbed a sandwich and changed clothes. Then I saddled and rode Sassy out to where Dad and Lloyd were sorting heavy cows in the meadow. We cut out twenty head.
Dad used the tractor to shove some bull rushes into the barn to be used for bedding. We loaded up Snyd's cement mixer that we've had borrowed for a while, to be taken back tomorrow. It is quite cold, so we put about ten heavies in the barn, did chores, and came in to a banquet that Mom fixed for a birthday supper. Pork chops, mashed potatoes and gravy, mixed vegetable, etc. and a cherry dessert were the eats. It was very good.
