My journal entry for Wednesday, January 31, 1968

I awoke this morning with just about enough leeway to make it to school on time. Grandma had a bad back, so I tried to help out with breakfast as much as I could—I'm a lousy cook's helper.

I walked to school and moseyed into band, joining just a handful of other band members. Most of the kids were too sleepy to make it, so those of us who were there had to really work at it to get the song to sound right.

The O'Neill Photo Company from Valentine was scheduled to take pictures during typing class. I trotted down to Grandma's to change clothes. Mom and Dad were a little late bringing the girls to school, so I waited for them. I changed my clothes, ambled back to school, and got there just in time to help move stuff around in the gym and on the stage.

By that time typing class was shot. The next two classes were devoted to taking pictures, and we worked on projects during Science. All of us kids were about dead beat from the short night of sleep, so the pictures will probably turn out "sour."

I cannot remember what we had for dinner, but it was probably good—most of Maggie's meals are. During the noon hour, I went down to Grandma's and changed back to "casual" clothes. Then quite a few of us boys played football on the field. It was rather muddy and some of us got splattered up pretty bad, but we had fun anyway.

During English, we read in our Literature books. Driver's Ed was used as study hall, as McKay took a couple fellow classmates out driving. The boys went down to phys ed, where we shot baskets and did a few calisthenics. We just held over until basketball practice, where we had a short but hard work-out. Mr. Nelson dismissed us at 4:30.

Ken and I walked down to Grandma's, where we helped her clean up some spilled flour. We walked down to the store, and I got cookies for MYF. When we got down to the church, Ken talked Rev. DeWitt out of giving us a lesson, his excuse being that Jeana was not there. As it was rather late, the preacher gave in.

We had a carry-in supper in the Methodist church annex—a going away party for Lester and Evelyn Hull. They have sold their ranch to Garould Fairhead and are moving to Gordon.

Mom and Dad went to Chadron to get a stockrack and radio for the pickup, and to fix the car. They returned late, so Mom and us kids came home, leaving Dad to represent the Green Valley at the church supper. Before our folks got back to Merriman, Sandra, Sybil, and I played a game of Rook with Grandma.

I drove home and tried to catch up with Father Time, as far as you are concerned, dear diary.

Everyone got to bed at a reasonable time.

Simpler times. yes, but we do more now. between more work due to more/better lighting in barns, shops, arena's, etc., more 'civic and organization type duties, more recreational/community/church activities, computers and more, I know we sleep less!!! Both are/were making some great memories, I guess for when we can no longer do all the things we do now.

BTW, Soapweed, I surely do enjoy your journals, almost as much as the photo's.

Another time user, which we are enjoying right now, dual tasking I guess, is the Red Steagal show on RFDTV. Love the stories and the music!
