My journal entry for Wednesday, June 5, 1968

Uncle Stan awoke us with the startling news that someone took a couple pot shots at Robert Kennedy, after his victory in the California primary election. We boys crawled out of our bedrolls (that were slightly wet with rain), and went into the Leach house. Breakfast consisted of fruit punch and rolls.

Uncle Stan saddled Hawk Eye and brought in the horses. I caught Jig (it sure seemed good to have a fresh horse). We loped over to where the cattle were with almost the same crew as yesterday—plus my sister, Sandra, and minus Ned Fair.

Our route took us through our summer pastures and some land that Leach's still own [we later purchased this additional 2720 acres from the Leach family in 1972]. Later on, my two sisters Sandra and Sybil were riding double on Ribbon. Ribbon fell down. Both girls were slightly shook up but neither was hurt very badly.

We had a coffee break and then headed the bunch across Ever Jensen's Glascock Place. At Uncle Stan's pasture, we had to rope a yearling heifer to remove her hornweights. John caught her.

The crew had dinner at the JO shack. Then the Fair boys and the Green Valley bunch rode home—Fairs going to their place a few miles west [now called the Tailbone Ranch, and owned by Chris Abbott], and the girls and I back to the Leach Place. We stopped awhile to talk with Dad and the hired men. They were putting a plastic bottom in the tank at the middle Fuchser windmill.

At the Leach Place, I had a good nap. The girls whiled away the time on the telephone. [It was mostly a vacant house, but the phone line was still intact.] After my nap, we picked up a small fortune in pop bottles.

We all piled into the pickup—the girls rode in the back. At home, we did chores and had supper.

P.S. It was Mom's birthday. [She turned 43 on this day.]
