New New Holland Balers

I can't say much about them.. WE looked into getting a NH one last fall but went vermeer for sevral reasons the formost being I liked the dealer a heck of a lot more being that they actually quoted me a price the moment I walked in the door while the NH dealer hemmed and hawed and never gave me anything concrete even after I called him about 10 times.. Next time I will go different route...

That being said, I was advised by a few locals to stay the heck away from NH balers.. Something about the BR's having higher than advertised HP requirments and something else that I can't remember right now about folks having trouble with them.. But I don't know how much of that is the Green predjudice that exists with equipment around here.. You can get dealers around here to bring out demo balers and try them at the same time sometimes.. Might be worth a try.
 
Hey CA, I would look at another color. I bought a BR780 three years ago, got all of the bells and whistles. It is the megawide pickup, and come to find out, the wide pickups self destruct and will not form a bale in dry conditions. Since we have only dryland hay, I have cussed that thing for three years. Got an ungrade from the factory installed on the pickup so it works better but still aint worth fighting with. I have tried to sell it, put it in auctions just to get rid of it and I have not had a single call on it. Look at all of the farm auctions and want ads in this state and there are BR780 balers all over the state for sale. I think that I am not the only unhappy customer. I went back and got an old 660 that has 8000 bales through it, those older ones bale any condition. The Vermeers are getting really good reviews around here, I would look into one of them if I was buying new.
 
I would have to agree. I have an old 660 that works great but I know some people who upgraded to the BR and didn't like it. 688 was the same way, built too light I guess. I only know 1 guy with the Vermeer M but he really likes it. Around here the only guys with JD's bleed green so I am not sure there reviews aren't biased, but they like them. There isn't a Heston dealer within 200 miles so I know nothing about them.
Make sure you pick a good dealer.
 
When I was choosing a replacement baler last year, I talked to a few custom guys. To a man, they like their BRs far better than the 660/664/688 series they also used. Its a fallacy that they aren't built as heavy. The 688 was the heaviest of all the NH balers (the 660/664 could be changed up) and the BR uses the same rollers, only they moved the bearings to the outside on pillow blocks to make replacement easier. I talked to a couple guys who used JD and NH, and he planned to eliminate all the JD stuff from his lineup.

You should have a look at Case/IH. Exact same balers, only cheaper than NH. Again, some people say they're built lighter, but its not true. All the part numbers on rollers/bearing cross over.

The pickup is what all the guys I have talked to are complaining about. Bent bands and then teeth catch etc. I don't know of anybody that has one that wouldn't rather have the old style pickup. That being said, I haven't heard any complaints about the rest of the baler.
