CFIA is investigating Anaplasmosis on a farm in Southern Saskatchewan.
The CFIA Lethbridge Lab confirmed on October 10, 2008 that follow-up
herd testing for a reactor from the Bovine Serological Survey (BSS) has
resulted in one positive for Anaplasmosis in a cow from a herd in the
Assiniboia area. CFIA staff from the Moose Jaw District Office issued a
Declaration of Infected Place notice to the owner on October 14, 2008
and all cattle on the premises were quarantined. The positive cow was
slaughtered on October 22, 2008. The remaining herd will be retested at
a time that provides allowances for incubation time and die-off of
vectors due to cold weather. Five herds adjacent to the index premises
have been identified. Epidemiologic investigation and herd test
scheduling for these herds is in progress. The anaplasmosis case has
been reported to the OIE.
