Oral Roberts stuns No. 3 Kansas

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) - Marchello Vealy and his Oral Roberts teammates went into Allen Fieldhouse with one goal.
"We wanted to come out and shock the world tonight," Vealy said, "and we did it."
Vealy hit his first seven 3-point shots and Oral Roberts outplayed No. 3 Kansas the whole way, stunning the ragged Jayhawks 78-71 Wednesday night.
"It may be the biggest regular-season win in school history," coach Scott Sutton said. "Our trainer has been here over 30 years and said it was the highest-ranked team we've ever beat."
Vealy, a 6-7 sophomore who shot 1-for-13 on 3-pointers last season, finished 7-for-8 from behind the arc. His only miss came on his last heave, after the Golden Eagles had thoroughly taken command.
The Golden Eagles (1-1) seemed quicker, more aggressive and better organized than the favored Jayhawks (1-1) from start to finish.
After trailing by as many as 10 points in the first half, the Big 12 favorites got as close as three.
But Ken Tutt hit ORU's 11th 3-pointer and added two free throws in the final minute. Caleb Green, a two-time Mid-Continent Conference player of the year, added 20 points and 11 rebounds.
"That team was a hungry team we played tonight," Kansas coach Bill Self said. "Caleb led the charge. I thought when we stopped them in the second half, I thought it was more their missing than us stopping them."
Kansas cut its deficit to 72-69 on Russell Robinson's free throw with one minute left before Tutt sealed Kansas' 11th loss in its last 176 games at home.
Tutt and Adam Liberty each had 12 points for the two-time defending conference champions.
"I've never seen anything like this tonight," Green said. "It was shocking at one point, but at the end of the day, it's a basketball game. Everybody has to put their shoes on the same way."
Green agreed that Kansas, which missed easy shots and was a miserable 11-for-21 from the foul line, had a tough game.
"They didn't have the best of nights. I don't know if that was due to us or just great players having off nights," he said. "I'll bet you they regroup."
Kansas got 22 points from freshman Darrell Arthur. Julian Wright, a preseason favorite for Big 12 player of the year, blew layups on two consecutive possessions as Kansas tried vainly to regain the lead in the second half.
Bearing little resemblance to the crisp outfit that routed Northern Arizona 91-57 in their season opener last week, the Jayhawks missed 11 of their first 17 shots and had 10 turnovers.
"We actually did a good job on Tutt," Self said. "But Vealy goes nuts. It's frustrating that we don't quite get it yet. That frustrates me."
Self coached at Oral Roberts from 1993-97, going 55-54 overall.
When Robinson missed a finger roll layup and Vealy converted his third straight 3-pointer, the Golden Eagles took their first 10-point lead at 28-18.
Brandon Rush had 14 points, Mario Chalmers 13 and Darnell Jackson 10 for Kansas.
"When you beat the No. 3 team in the country, you have to feel well," Green said. "This is a big day for our university. I knew we had a bunch of good players, but Marchello Vealy - nobody knew he was going to come in here and shoot like that tonight. He put it over the top. All the pieces were there for a big upset."
