I took this video today, thought people might be interested in how we handle the cows at calving time. It has been especially cold here the last few days. Today was quite a bit warmer, but still chilly enough that if possible we like to have to cows in the barn to calve. So I saw this old girl down in the windbreak calving. When I first noticed her she had just had the waterbag, so I figured I better go get her up before I had to haul the calf up in the sled. The temps are around -10 to -15 C at the moment, not dangerously cold, but cold enough.

Since I had my cell phone with me, well I try to always carry it when I'm out checking cows, makes life just a bit safer if I can call for help in an emergency. Anyways I decided to video bringing the old girl up to the barn. She's been there done that, it's not the first time into the barn for her, and I figured she'd be pretty easy to bring up. They sure aren't always like her! So here you go..... A trip up the hill to the barn with me!

First a couple photos
This is me.....one of the few times you'll see my face on that side of the camera, and DD's ex 4H cow in the background....

And a shot of the cows on the straw, wouldn't be surprised if they all calved tonight... but only 1 is calving in the photo

Now the videos, it took me less than 10 min to get her up the hill and into the barn.

Oh, and in case you're wondering, she had the calf about 1/2-3/4 of an hour later. I'm looking at her on my TV right now. Don't know what it is though!

How terribly inhumane of you Randiliana! :D

Looks like you have it all well under control.

That is a great display of all that is great with cattle. You have the facilities, the cattle temperament and the demeanor to get the job done without stress to the critter or you, even though the weather is not great. You will get your reward this fall.

LOL, thank you. I wish all the cows were as easy to handle as she was! If it were possible, I'd video one in the dark with both my hubby and I running up and down that hill 3-4 times (tripping over manure piles) before we took the whole herd up to get her..... But yes most of our cows are pretty quiet and easy to handle. This is one reason why we cull bad temperaments out so hard.

Is there a trick to opening the videos???

I can't seem to get any reaction from my computer when I click on them

The top 2 are pictures and not clickable. The bottom 2 are the videos. I don't know if they are still working or not (they work for me). If they aren't I will try to get new links up.
