We just finished our Fall 2013 Newsletter. We send it out once a year to commercial ranchers all over the surrounding states. If anyone wants to take the time to read it. Click on the link below.

Good newsletter. The only comment I would have is on the percent of cow weight weaned by an 1100 lb cow. That number being inaccurate by 2-3 percent could really change the bottom line. Our cows are closer to 1100 than 1400 and I believe we are weaning at a higher percentage than 44 percent. If you bump the weaning percentage to 46 percent it would probably show the smaller cows as more profitable.

You might be right, but the idea was to open up and think a little different. All we hear these days is how small cattle are good, and big cattle are bad. But, honestly, is 1400 lbs that big. I have seen a lot of 1600 lbs cows and now those are big.

But, if they are 2% bigger, and by using the same auction I used before for my prices (steam boat springs superior sale). The average price for 500 to 545 lbs was $1.79. Which is $905.74. The average weight/price I used in the article was 484 lbs at $1.90 which is $920. So by using these prices and your idea of the % being a bit larger, you are at $14 a calf less than before.

I am not trying to prove you wrong, just showing the numbers as was figured.
