A few weeks ago I helped the other permittee trail to the forest. I thought I'd worked my cattle in nasty weather... WRONG  . The windchill was in the twenties, and it snowed that day
.
Cows taking a break during the five mile trip.
The crew trying to warm up. Luckily I didn't ride the first part, instead I "volunteered" to drive the pickup to the rest spot
. I'm not dumb  . I rode after the break, and most of my ride was in shelter  .
Almost there...
This is a cow I named "Gretchen". She reminds me of the country singer Gretchen Wilson... I can totally see her as the type downing shots at the bar and getting into fights
. She and I absolutely HATE one another. She seeks my dog out and tries to make border collie hamburger out of her. She also likes to face my horse. With the use of rocks and ropes, we've come to an understanding over the years  . I see she has a fancy brockle face heifer at her side this spring. Hopefully she won't be as miserable as her mother to handle
.
Driving home, glad to be in a warm pickup.
I couldn't repair the other side of a water gap since the water was too deep earlier in the month. Last week I packed in my hot pink/neon blue aqua socks and waded across (brush too thick for a horse). The aqua socks worked well, but I don't advise them for long hikes through pine needles, rocks, and creeping juniper  . I must admit the cold water felt great on my feet!
My two friends which rode with me to check forest cattle last week. Bob is a retired physician who now flies people into the backcountry of Idaho for packtrips during the summer, and Barb who's married to a rodeo stock contractor. Barb likes working my quiet cattle
