I thought since I had a few minutes today, I would load a few more of my slow loading pictures. Today seemed like picture day, so I thought I would join in.

The kids and I took a little salt out, checked cattle, and had a good time a couple weeks ago. Here is a quick tour of our morning.

This one is them trying out an old well on the SE corner of our ranch.

Here are some heifers checking them out, and hopefully waiting for a drink, in the most prosperous part of our ranch.

More yearling Hfrs.

One of a landmark in the area.

Another from the same spot. Shows the grass we have this year a little better.

This is from the near the top of the higher butte looking down at the other butte.

A picture I took of the kids, and we used the cartoon mode from Kodak's album on it. They thought this was real neat. It is from the spot on the butte that I took the last picture from.

We had a fun time. :-)

Great pictures-- nice to see you have a little green in your area....

Thats going to be one mighty tough blonde if she pumps all those heifers water every day

Don't matter how old they are, OT always notices a pretty blonde!

Nice pictures, Tap. Grass looks good, heifers look good and the kids
look really good. I'm not sure what you're best at, raising cattle, raising
grass or raising kids. Closest I can tell you excel at all three. :-)

Do you have cheat grass starting to show up now? Sure seems like we
have alot of it, or seemed that way to me today. What kind of grass
is your grass mainly? Nice to see so much of it!

Thanks FH. I think we all hope the kids are our most successful crop. All else is kind of secondary, although I am proud of all.

We had some fall moisture last year, and I knew that would bring on some cheatgrass. We have mostly just spots of it, but more than I would like to see. Mostly just a fire danger.

We also have a lot of needle and thread, but that is normal in this area for now. Our good grasses are thread leaf sedge (my favorite), several varieties of gramma grasses (usually later in the year) little bluestem, western wheatgrass, and some less predominant ones. Most years this country is fairly clean of weeds and undesireables, but we can get them at times too. Our fire danger is going to be high soon if we don't get some rain, but the grasses usually mature this time of the year and dry out anyway.

Boy that's some scenic country, green grass, black cattle and mountains, you got it going on Tap,especially with all that good help you got there,I agree it dont get no better'n that ..............good luck

Thanks for the nice comments. :-)

I have to tell one cute story on the little cowpoke in my picture.

He is sort of like myself, and gets things a little mixed up now and then.
A week ago we were out on a rendevous :-) , and he needed to relieve himself pretty badly. So we ambled up to a tree and he got the job done. As he was zipping up his pants he says, "dad, that really hit the spot". lol.

I just about died laughing.

Thanks for posting, I love seeing other folks' places, each picture has a beauty of its own. Cute kids, bet they are great help :!: :D

Tap-thanks for the pictures :) Great looking -everything from the kids to the cattle-heifers really nice. Hope it continues to rain on you!

TAP, I am really impressed with your heifers. They look to be straight Angus. I am interested the predominant blood lines in them. I don't know where you live, but what great vista you have. Keep up the great pictures. It gives some of the rest of us something to day dream about.

That's just precious!!!!!!!! I remember when Al was younger, and used to say things like that.......seems like only yesterday.

Great pics, Tap......I had wondered if your oldest was a girl.

efb, I live in far NW SD. Those are the Crow Buttes, as Badlands mentioned. Our heifers are probably close enough to purebred (% wise) to be registered, but they are definately commercial. We used a lot of Oscer(how in the heck do you spell that) bloodlines in the late 80's, but most of them now have some N Bar genetics (Prime Time, EXT, etc), and a lot of some of the other more moderate Montana genetics. Angus breeders might not think he fits the moderate mold, but we really liked a son of GAR Precision, and used a lot of sons of his. And we AI'd to this son of Precision too. He was a thick son of a gun. We bought 6 bulls at the N Bar Ranch's last sale, six years ago, and we sold three of the bulls last year, and have three to use the last time this year. They are 7 years old this spring. About half of our bulls now are from Redland Angus ranch in Manderson Wyo., and we like them pretty well. He plans on having a huge percentage of his cows be out of of OCC Emblazon, and I really like the bulls I have seen out of him. We have a few of them, but they are really spendy to buy from Redlands. His last sales averaged over 4000$/bull.

And yes I have quite a vista from this area. I can see Terry Peak in the Black Hills from my mailbox on a clear day, and it must be 70 miles away. Maybe later I will post what I see when I look to the west of our ranch site. I have a great view towards the direction of Montana.

efb, just got off the ph. with the guy that buys a load of these same hfrs. (as calves in the fall) from us pretty regular. He has them in Broken Bow Neb. and needs to move them because of poor grass conditions. They are AI'd and some cleanup bulls turned in, so there would probably be about 90 or so of them that he would sell. If you are interested in them, or know of anyone who is PM me, and I will get you in touch with him. Or anyone else for that matter. They were just as good as our keeping hfrs.

Thanks for the information. We are in the same situation on grass here. Our grass is getting mighty short and I bought hay last week. I hate to pay $50 per roll for grass hay, but it is that or sell more cows. We did get 1.5 inche rain over the week end which will help. Too bad some of that rain in Houston couldn't have moved a couple hundred miles north.
I lived in Brookings before moving down here. Miss that country some.
